The Skeletal System
Grade 6 Lesson
ENGAGE
What are the other
functions of the
The muscular system provides
shape and aids in movement. It
works side by side with the
skeletal system which provides
the body’s main framework.
The world’s tallest building to date
is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. What
makes this structure amazing is
that it has a strong foundation
that supports its towering height
and weight. Your body is also
supported by a strong foundation
called the skeletal system.
Without bones, you will be walking
around like a soft jelly.
EXPLORE
Discuss the location
and importance of
bones in the human
skeletal system.

EXPLORE
What are movable joints?
Give examples of movable
joints in the body.
Interactive
EXPLORE
Movable joints are joints that have
flexibility and capable of moving in any
directions. Examples of movable joints
are fingers, hips, elbows, and knees.
Interactive
EXPLORE
What is the primary function
of skeletal system in our
body?
Interactive
EXPLORE
The primary function of the skeletal
system is to serve as the framework and
support for muscles and other body parts.
Interactive
EXPLORE What are the parts of the
skeletal system?
Interactive
EXPLORE
The parts of the skeletal system are
bones and cartilage.
Interactive
Twenty percent of a common adult’s body
weight is made up of bones. The primary
function of the skeletal system is to serve as the
framework and support for muscles and other
EXPLORE
body parts. It also supports body movements.
Interactive
Humans are born with around 300 bones in the
body. But as you grow and develop, some of the
bones fuse together and only 206 bones are left
in an adult human body.
EXPLORE
Interactive
The axial skeleton refers to the 80 bones that lie
in the central axis of a human body. This
includes the skull, vertebrae, ribs, and sternum.
The appendicular skeleton, on the other hand,
EXPLORE
refers to the 126 bones that can be found in the
upper and lower extremities.
Interactive
The following are some of the important bones
that protect major organs in the body. The skull,
which consists of the cranium, facial bones, ear
bones and throat, houses the brain. The thoracic
EXPLORE
cage, or simply the rib cage, protects the heart
and lungs.
Interactive
Vertebral Column
The vertebral column which is also known as the
EXPLORE
backbone or spine, is found in the center of the
skeleton. It protects the spinal cord which is the
main link between the brain and the rest of the
nerves in the body.
Interactive
Joints
A joint is mainly where two bones meet or
EXPLORE
connect. It dictates movement, whether it is
immobile or mobile. I
Immobile joints allow little to no movement at
all. Examples of this are the skull and pelvis.
Movable joints on the other hand allow the body
to make varied movements. Bones in movable
joints are bound together by strong connective
tissues called ligaments. Most of these joints
Interactive
have a secondary connective tissues called
cartilages

Types of Joints
EXPLORE
A hinge joint allows the back and forth
movement of bones. Examples of which are
the knees and elbows.
A ball-and-socket joint permits a great range
of movements because it has a circular end
that suits into a cup-like cavity well enough to
connect one bone to another. Examples of this
kind would be the knee and shoulder.
Interactive
Types of Joints
EXPLORE
The neck is an example of a pivot joint which
allows one bone to rotate on another.
Bones located in your wrists, ankles, and
between vertebrae are examples of gliding
joints which allows a bone to slide over
another.

Common Ailments of the
Skeletal System
EXPLORE
Injuries such sprain, dislocation, and fracture
may occur if the body is not protected while
doing physical activities.
Arthritis is common among old people and is
caused by the slow abrasion of cartilage
resulting to stiffness and joint swelling.
Osteoporosis is also a common among older
people because as people age, calcium
absorption weakens which causes such
disease. Interactive

Taking care of Skeletal
System
Eating a well-balanced and nutrient-rich diet.
EXPLORE
Food that are rich in Vitamin D, calcium, and
phosphorus such as meat, grains, and
vegetables keep the bones strong.
Exercise also keeps the bones healthy but
must be done properly and in moderation.

How can you
prevent yourself
from suffering
from
osteoporosis?
God was wise to create you with
bones that will give you
structure and protection. Bones
provide protection, strength and
serve as storage for various
nutrients that our body needs.
Now, God didn’t give these
structures for nothing. God
creates us with amazing
complexity for us to have ability
to do amazing functions and to
fulfill His command to go into all
the world and preach the gospel.
Indeed, we are wonderfully
made by God.
