CHRIST IN THE

SACRIFICIAL
SYSTEM
After Adam’s sin and fall, nothing
was taken from the law of God. The
principles of the Ten
Commandments existed before the
fall, and were of a character suited
to the condition of a holy order of
beings.
Psalm 73:17
Until I went into the

Evangelism p. 221
The sin of our first parents brought guilt
and sorrow upon the world, and had it not
been for the goodness and mercy of God,
would have plunged the race into

And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great

Romans 5:19
For as by one man's disobedience
many were made sinners, so by the
obedience of one shall many be made
righteous.
The fall of man filled all heaven with
sorrow. The world that God had made was
blighted with the curse of sin and
inhabited by beings doomed to misery
and death. There appeared no escape for
those who had transgressed the law....

God Himself, only one equal with God could

An Upward Look pg 378
The Lord Jesus Christ has prepared a covering—the
robe of His own righteousness—that He will put on
every repenting, believing soul who by faith will
receive it. Said John, “Behold the Lamb of God,
which taketh away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).
Sin is the transgression of the law. Christ died to
make it possible for every man to have his sins
taken away.
A fig-leaf apron will never cover our nakedness. Sin
must be taken away, and the garment of Christ's
righteousness must cover the transgressor of God's
law. Then when the Lord looks upon the believing
sinner, He sees, not the fig leaves covering him, but
Christ's own robe of righteousness, which is perfect
obedience to the law of Jehovah. Man has hidden
his nakedness, not under a covering of fig leaves,
but under the robe of Christ's righteousness.
Sin is disloyalty to God, and [is] deserving of punishment.
Fig leaves sewed together have been employed since the
days of Adam, yet the nakedness of the soul of the sinner
is not covered. All the arguments pieced together by all
who have interested themselves in this flimsy robe will
come to nought. Sin is the transgression of the law. Christ
was manifest in our world to take away transgression and
sin, and to substitute for the covering of fig leaves the
pure robes of His righteousness. The law of God stands
vindicated by the suffering and death of the only begotten
Son of the infinite God.
The transgression of God's law in a single instance, in the
smallest particular, is sin. And the non-execution of the
penalty of that sin would be a crime in the divine
administration. God is a judge, the avenger of justice,
which is the habitation and foundation of His throne. He
cannot dispense with His law, He cannot do away with its
smallest item in order to meet and pardon sin. The
rectitude and justice and moral excellence of the law must
be maintained and vindicated before the heavenly
universe and the worlds unfallen.

To man the first intimation of redemption
was communicated in the sentence
pronounced upon Satan in the garden. The

thou shalt bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:15.

forward to final victory.

notwithstanding their great sin, they
were not to be abandoned to the
control of Satan.
The Son of God had offered to atone,
with His own life, for their
transgression. A period of probation
would be granted them, and through

Adam and Eve were created, God made
known to them His law. It was not then

All who have received the light upon these subjects are to bear
testimony of the great truths which God has committed to them.
The sanctuary in heaven is the very center of Christ's work in
behalf of men. It concerns every soul living upon the earth. It
opens to view the plan of redemption, bringing us down to the
very close of time, and revealing the triumphant issue of the
contest between righteousness and sin. It is of the utmost
importance that all should thoroughly investigate these subjects,
and be able to give an answer to every one that asketh them a
reason of the hope that is in them.—

Chapter 17-The Sin-Offering
In none of the types was the individual worshiper brought
into so close touch with the sanctuary service as in the sin-
offering. There is no part of religious worship that brings
the individual worshiper into such close touch with the Lord
as when he kneels at the Saviour’s feet, confessing his
sins, and knowing the strength of the promise, “If we
confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our
sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” It is then
that the repentant sinner touches the hem of the Master’s
garment, and receives his healing power in the soul.
Sin is the transgression of the law of God. The one who had “done
somewhat against any of the commandments of the Lord“ was
guilty of sin; and in order to be free from sin, he must bring an
offering, that by seeing the innocent victim die for his sins he
might more fully comprehend how the innocent Lamb of God could
offer his life for the sins of the world. If the sinner was a priest,
filling that holy office where the influence of his wrong course
would cause others to stumble, then he was to bring a bullock, an
expensive animal, as a sin-offering; but if he was one of the
common people, he could bring a kid or a lamb. The value of the
animal to be offered was determined by the position held by the
transgressor.
The sin offering was brought into the court of
the sanctuary, to the door of the tabernacle of
the congregation. 1 The sinner, with his hands
laid upon the head of the lamb, confessed
over it all his sins, and then with his own hand
he killed it.

The passover pointed backward to the
deliverance of the children of Israel, and was
also typical, pointing forward to Christ, the
Lamb of God, slain for the redemption of
fallen man. The blood sprinkled upon the

Christ, and also the continual dependence of
sinful man upon the merits of that blood for
safety from the power of Satan, and for final

The great truth that was to be kept before men, and
imprinted upon mind and heart, was this, “Without
shedding of blood is no remission.” In every bleeding
sacrifice was typified “the Lamb of God, which taketh
away the sin of the world.” Christ Himself was the
originator of the Jewish system of worship, in which, by
types and symbols, were shadowed forth spiritual and
heavenly things. Many forgot the true significance of
these offerings; and the great truth that through Christ
alone there is forgiveness of sin, was lost to them. The

The work of God's dear Son in undertaking to link the
created with the Uncreated, the finite with the Infinite, in
His own divine person, is a subject that may well employ
our thoughts for a lifetime. This work of Christ was to
confirm the beings of other worlds in their innocency and
loyalty, as well as to save the lost and perishing of this
world. He opened a way for the disobedient to return to
their allegiance to God, while by the same act He placed
a safeguard around those who were already pure, that
they might not become polluted.—
The Review and Herald, January 11, 1881.
The divine Son of God was the only sacrifice of sufficient
value to fully satisfy the claims of God's perfect law. The
angels were sinless, but of less value than the law of God.
They were amenable to law. They were messengers to do
the will of Christ, and before Him to bow. They were
created beings, and probationers. Upon Christ no
requirements were laid. He had power to lay down His life,
and to take it again. No obligation was laid upon Him to
undertake the work of atonement. It was a voluntary
sacrifice that He made. His life was of sufficient value to
rescue man from his fallen condition.—
The Burnt Offering
The whole burnt-offering had its origin at the
gate of the garden of Eden, 1 and extended to
the cross; and it will never lose its significance
as long as mankind is subject to temptation
and sin. The entire sacrifice was laid upon the
altar and burned, 2 typifying not only a
surrender of sin, but a consecration of the
entire life to the service of God.
The accounts of the burnt-offerings in the Bible are a
history of wonderful victories when individuals drew
near to God by putting away their sins and
surrendering their lives and all they possessed to the
service of the Lord. Abraham’s great test of faith was
a burnt-offering upon Mount Moriah. 7 Gideon’s
wonderful victories dated from the whole burnt-
offerings offered before the Lord when he, by those
offerings, showed he surrendered all to the Lord to be
consumed on the altar as the Lord directed.
The whole burnt-offering was offered as an atonement
for sin. The individual making the offering laid his
hands on the head of the animal, confessing his
sins; and then, if it was from the flock or the herd,
with his own hands he took its life. If the burnt-
offering was a bird, the priest killed the offering. The
blood was sprinkled round about upon the brazen
altar, in type of the cleansing blood of Christ, and
then the offering was burned upon the altar.

Also, Paul referred to this altar as a type of
Christ. All the work connected with the altar

with the destruction of sin, a work which
Christ alone can do. The Father has delivered
into the hands of His Son the final destruction

EARTH
HEAVEN
The constant burning upon the altar of that which
typified sin, caused an accumulation of ashes. The
priests in the earthly sanctuary served “unto the
example and shadow of heavenly things,” and
even the removal of the ashes was directed of the
Lord to be done in a manner to typify a portion of
the final work of Christ. The priest was to be clothed
in the pure white linen garments, when he removed
the ashes from the altar. The ashes were first taken
up by the priest and placed “beside the altar” on
When the time came to remove them
from beside the altar, the priest laid
aside his priestly robes, and “put on
other garments;” then he carried the
ashes forth without the camp, and
poured them out in “a clean place.”
Ashes are all that will remain of sin, the devil and
sinners after the fires of the last day have finished
their work. When the purifying fires of the Lord have
removed the last trace of sin, there will appear a
new earth, a clean place, without one taint of sin
upon it; and as the righteous walk over the face of
the clean, pure earth, the ashes of sin and all that
clung to sin in this earth will be under their feet.
Truly the type will then have met its antitype, and
the ashes of all sin will be in “a clean place.”
Leviticus 6
When the priest placed the ashes beside the altar,
he was clothed in his priestly robes. The ashes
represented the confessed sins of the righteous.
When Christ bears the confessed sins of His people,
He wears His priestly robes; but the time comes
when He will place the sins of the righteous on the

Lookingglass
Unlike our looking-glasses made of silvered glass,
which did not come into use till the thirteenth
century, these primitive looking-glasses were made
chiefly of an alloy of copper, tin, and lead, wrought
with such admirable skill that it was capable of
receiving the highest and most enduring polish. The
mirror itself was a round or pear-shaped plate, often
encircled with a wreath of leaves, or adorned with
figures engraved upon the rim; and it was attached
to a handle often carved with some elegant form of

The Bible is of the highest value because it is
the word of the living God. Of all the books in
the world it is the most deserving of study and
attention, for it is eternal wisdom. The Bible is
a history that tells us of the creation of the
world and opens to us past centuries. Without
it we should have been left to conjecture and
fable in regard to the occurrences of the
remote past.
It reveals to us the Creator of the heavens
and the earth, with the universe that He
has brought into being, and it sheds a
glorious light over the world to come.

The Only True Guide—A familiar
acquaintance with the Scriptures sharpens
the discerning powers and fortifies the soul
against the attacks of Satan. The Bible is
the sword of the Spirit, which will never fail
to vanquish the adversary. It is the only
true guide in all matters of faith and

The reason why Satan has so great control
over the minds and hearts of men is that
they have not made the Word of God the
man of their counsel, and all their ways
have not been tried by the true test. The

We are to bear the yoke of Christ that we may be
placed in complete union with him. “Take my yoke
upon you,” he says. Obey my requirements. But
these requirements may be in direct opposition to
the will and purposes of the human agent. What
then is to be done?—Hear what God says: “If any
man will come after me, let him deny himself, and
take up his cross daily, and follow me.” The yoke

Wearing the yoke unites finite man in
companionship with the dearly beloved Son of God.
Lifting the cross cuts away self from the soul, and
places man where he learns how to bear Christ's
burdens. We can not follow Christ without wearing
his yoke, without lifting the cross and bearing it
after him. If our will is not in accord with the divine
requirements, we are to deny our inclinations, give
up our darling desires, and step in Christ's
footsteps.

These garments of white linen were made “for glory and

The Center of Christ's Atoning Work—The
subject of the sanctuary and the investigative

people of God. All need a knowledge for
themselves of the position and work of their

position which God designs them to fill.
Every individual has a soul to save or to lose.
Each has a case pending at the bar of God. Each

important, then, that every mind contemplate

the end of the days. Evangelism 221.3

In the parable of Matthew 22 the same figure of the
marriage is introduced, and the investigative judgment is
clearly represented as taking place before the marriage...
He who is found wanting is cast out, but all who upon
examination are seen to have the wedding garment on are
accepted of God and accounted worthy of a share in His
kingdom and a seat upon His throne. This work of
examination of character, of determining who are prepared
for the kingdom of God, is that of the investigative
judgment, the closing of work in the sanctuary above. {GC

There is a touching significance in the
high priest’s wearing the names of all
Israel on his shoulders and over his heart
as he performed the work which typified
the judgment, when the case of every one
will come up in review before God. The
breastplate was called “the breastplate of
judgment.”
Those names engraved on the stones were
a type of the names of the overcomers,
which Christ will confess before His father
and the angels. Stone is an enduring
substance, but far more enduring is the
book of life, where the names which Christ
has confessed, are written to remain
forever. CIS ch12

We are Called to be the Light

The church of Christ is the candlestick to hold up the light
in the midst of moral darkness. The Saviour says, “Ye are
the light of the world.” The Spirit of the Lord is said to be
the eyes of the Lord which “run to and fro throughout the
whole earth, strongly to hold with them whose heart is
perfect toward Him.” 9 Then the brightness of our light
depends upon the condition of our heart. The Spirit is
searching throughout the earth for those whose hearts are
perfect toward God, and it will “strongly hold” with such
ones: their light will not burn dim.

True character is not shaped from without, and put
on; it radiates from within. If we wish to direct
others in the path of righteousness, the principles
of righteousness must be enshrined in our own
hearts. Our profession of faith may proclaim the
theory of religion, but it is our practical piety that
holds forth the word of truth. The consistent life,
the holy conversation, the unswerving integrity, the
active, benevolent spirit, the godly example,—these
are the mediums through which light is conveyed to

“I know that the sanctuary question stands in
righteousness and truth, just as we have held it for so
many years. It is the enemy that leads minds off on
sidetracks. He is pleased when those who know the
truth become engrossed in collecting scriptures to
pile around erroneous theories, which have no
foundation in truth. The scriptures thus used are
misapplied; they were not given to substantiate error,
but to strengthen truth.”—Gospel Workers, 303.
None but the high priest could perform the sacred
work of lighting the lamps in the earthly sanctuary;
he trimmed and lighted them each morning and
evening. So none but our High Priest, who was
“tempted in all points like as we are,” can give us
the help we need. In the morning we need His Spirit
to direct us during the day; and at evening we need
it to enlighten our minds as we review the work of
the day, that we may detect the flaws and dropped
threads in the warp of our lives.
The trimming and lighting of the lamps
was a beautiful type with a daily lesson
for us at the present time. It was a link in
that marvelous threefold typical chain of
service celebrated each morning and

people were praying without” the

God's ministers are to be constantly supplied,
that they, in turn, may impart it to church.
God's servants can obtain victories only by inward
purity, by cleanness of heart, by holiness. It is of
the utmost importance that ministers set a right
example. If they follow lax, loose principles, their
example is quoted by those who are doing wrong as
a vindication of their course. The whole synagogue
of Satan is watching for defects in the lives of God's
representatives, and the most is made of every

The Review and Herald, December 22, 1904.
Many receive the truth readily, but they fail to assimilate
truth, and its influence is not abiding. They are like the
foolish virgins, who had no oil in their vessels with their
lamps. Oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, which is brought
into the soul through faith in Jesus Christ. Those who
earnestly search the Scriptures with much prayer, who
rely upon God with firm faith, who obey his
commandments, will be among those who are represented
as wise virgins. The teachings of the word of God are not
yea and nay, but yea and amen. The requirement of the
gospel is far-reaching. Says the apostle,
Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the
name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and
the Father by him.” “Whether therefore ye eat, or
drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of
God.” Practical piety will not be attained by giving
the grand truths of the Bible a place in the outer
courts of the heart. The religion of the Bible must
be brought into the large and the little affairs of life.
It must furnish the powerful motives and principles
that will regulate the Christian's character and

In all that pertains to the success of God's

the home life. Here the preparation for the

parents remember that their home is to be a

There is another work that should receive

Sabbath Preparation 4
Nothing which will in the sight of Heaven be regarded as a
violation of the holy Sabbath should be left unsaid or undone,
to be said or done upon the Sabbath. God requires not only
that we refrain from physical labor upon the Sabbath, but that
the mind be disciplined to dwell upon sacred themes. The
fourth commandment is virtually transgressed by conversing
upon worldly things or by engaging in light and trifling
conversation. Talking upon anything or everything which may
come into the mind is speaking our own words. Every
deviation from right brings us into bondage and
condemnation. Counsel for the Church 263.4

The Holy Spirit comes to the soul as a Comforter.
By the transforming agency of His grace, the
image of God is reproduced in the disciple; he
becomes a new creature. Love takes the place of
hatred, and the heart receives the divine
similitude. This is what it means to live "by every
word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
This is eating the Bread that comes down from

The priests served “unto the example and
shadow of heavenly things;” therefore there is
a heavenly lesson for us in the antitype of the
showbread. It was a continual offering, ever
before the Lord. It taught that man was wholly
dependent upon God for both temporal and
spiritual food, and that both alike come to us
through the One who “ever liveth to make
intercession” for us before the Father. CIS 56.2
Why did the Bread had to

Among the Jews leaven was sometimes used as an
emblem of sin. At the time of the Passover the people
were directed to remove all the leaven from their houses
as they were to put away sin from their hearts. Christ
warned His disciples, "Beware ye of the leaven of the
Pharisees, which is hypocrisy." Luke 12:1. And the apostle
Paul speaks of the "leaven of malice and wickedness.“1

1844?
THE GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT
The singular religious event of America in
1844 was the momentous events of October
22. This was the final end-time date (of
several) set by followers of William Miller, the
lay Baptist preacher whose prophecy-laden
sermons in Portland four years earlier had
stirred the heart of the young Ellen Harmon
with rousing sermons on the imminent second
Miller, using the Bible and his
knowledge of mathematics
and history, had initially
stated that Daniel's prophecy
of a “cleansing of the
sanctuary" – which Miller
believed was the Earth –
would be fulfilled in 1843
with the second Advent.
The prophecy, after all, seemed plain:
"And he said unto me, Unto two thousand
and three hundred days; then shall the
sanctuary be cleansed." (Daniel 8:14, KJV)
Using the "year for a day" principle as
illustrated by examples found in Numbers
14:34 and Ezekiel 4:6, Miller arrived on
the 1843 date for Christ to return and
The 2300-day time prophecy
started with the decree by
the Persian King Artaxerxes,
to rebuild Jerusalem in the
fall of 457 B.C. and using
the day for a year principle
counted forwards 2300
years to the fall of 1843.
When Christ didn’t return on the
predicted date, Miller suggested the
following year of 1844, admitting he
had mistakenly allowed a "year zero"
between the years B.C. (Before Christ)
and A.D. (Anno Domini, or, Year of the
Lord).
While Ellen joined her fellow Advent believers
in anticipating that day, her disappointment
did not—as for many of the other Millerites—
extinguish her belief in Christ’s soon return.
The same William Miller, who wrote this letter
full of hope and encouragement to his dear
friend Joshua V. Himes only three weeks after
The Great Disappointment.
“I have fixed my mind upon another time,
and here I mean to stand until God gives
me more light—and that is today, Today,
and TODAY, until He comes, and I see HIM
for whom my soul yearns.”—Life of
Miller, 303, 304.
Ellen recalled it this way: "It was hard to
take up the vexing cares of life that we
thought had been laid down forever. It
was a bitter disappointment that fell upon
the little flock whose faith had been so
strong and whose hope had been so
high. ... We were disappointed but not
disheartened."—Life Sketches 1880, p.
The key, it turned out, was not to view the
sanctuary cleansing as referring to what
happened on the Earth, but rather the
completion of Jesus' work in
the heavenly sanctuary. Instead of coming to
the earth at the termination of the 2300 days
in 1844, Christ then entered the most holy
place of the heavenly sanctuary to perform
the closing work of judgement preparatory to

He who catches a glimpse of the matchless
love of Christ counts all other things as loss,
and looks upon Him as the chiefest among ten
thousand and as the one altogether lovely. As
seraphim and cherubim look upon Christ, they
cover their faces with their wings. Their own

improper it is for men to exalt themselves!
Let them rather be clothed with humility,

fallen men He said: “O righteous Father, the

known Thee.” “I have manifested Thy name

the world.”5T 737.2
The Character of God
Revealed in Christ
From the beginning it has been
Satan's studied plan to cause men
to forget God, that he might
secure them to himself. Hence he
has sought to misrepresent the
character of God, to lead men to
cherish a false conception of Him.
The Creator has been presented to
their minds as clothed with the
attributes of the prince of evil
himself,—as arbitrary, severe, and
unforgiving,—that He might be
feared, shunned, and even hated
by men
KJV Ezekiel 33:11 Say unto them, As I
live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no
pleasure in the death of the wicked;
but that the wicked turn from his way
and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil
ways; for why will ye die, O house of
Israel?
It was by falsifying the character of
God and exciting distrust of Him that
Satan tempted Eve to transgress. By
sin the minds of our first parents were
darkened, their natures were
degraded, and their conceptions of
God were molded by their own

Says the apostle: “God was in Christ,
reconciling the world unto Himself.” Only as
we contemplate the great plan of redemption
can we have a just appreciation of the
character of God. The work of creation was a
manifestation of His love; but the gift of God to

the infinite depths of divine tenderness and

Psalm 89:14
Justice and judgment are
the habitation of thy throne:
mercy and truth shall go
before thy face.
Through Jesus, God's mercy was
manifested to men; but mercy does
not set aside justice. The law reveals
the attributes of God's character, and
not a jot or tittle of it could be changed
to meet man in his fallen condition.
God did not change His law, but He
sacrificed Himself, in Christ, for man's
redemption. “God was in Christ,
reconciling the world unto himself” (
2 Corinthians 5:19)....
God’s Amazing Grace 74.1
God's love has been expressed in His
justice no less than in His mercy.
Justice is the foundation of His throne,
and the fruit of His love. It had been
Satan's purpose to divorce mercy from
truth and justice. He sought to prove
that the righteousness of God's law is
But Christ shows that in God's plan
they are indissolubly joined together;
the one cannot exist without the

).
The principles of kindness, mercy, and
love, taught and exemplified by our
Saviour, are a transcript of the will and
character of God…. God executes
justice upon the wicked, for the good
of the universe, and even for the good
of those upon whom His judgments are
visited….
To sin, wherever found, “our God is a
consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:29. In all
who submit to His power the Spirit of
God will consume sin. But if men cling
to sin, they become identified with it.
Then the glory of God, which destroys
sin, must destroy them.48The Desire of Ages, 107.
By His life and His death, Christ
proved that God's justice did not
destroy His mercy, but that sin
could be forgiven, and that the
law is righteous, and can be
perfectly obeyed. Satan's charges
were refuted. The Desire of Ages, 762
Through the cross, man was drawn to
God, and God to man. Justice moved from
its high and awful position, and the
heavenly hosts, the armies of holiness,
drew near to the cross, bowing with
reverence; for at the cross justice was
satisfied.

The Law of God
Within the ark was the Lord’s own copy of
that holy law given to mankind in the
beginning. “Where no law is, there is no
transgression.” “Sin is not imputed when
there is no law;” therefore the Lord could
never have driven our first parents from

sin, if they had been ignorant of His holy
After God had declared the ten
commandments from the top of Mount
Sinai, He wrote them upon two tables
of stone, and gave them to Moses,
with the instruction, “Thou shalt put
them in the ark.” The ark was placed

2.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any
likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in
the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them:
for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the
iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and
fourth generation of them that hate me;
And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me,
and keep my commandments
Our Creator demands our supreme devotion, our
first allegiance. Anything which tends to abate
our love for God, or to interfere with the service
due Him, becomes thereby an idol. With some
their lands, their houses, their merchandise, are
the idols. Business enterprises are prosecuted
with zeal and energy, while the service of God is
made a secondary consideration.
Family worship is neglected, secret prayer
forgotten. Many claim to deal justly with their
fellow-men, and seem to feel that in so doing
they discharge their whole duty. But it is not
enough to keep the last six commandments of
the Decalogue. We are to love the Lord our God
with all the heart. Nothing short of obedience to
every precept … can satisfy the claims of the
divine law.
Anything that diverts the mind
from God assumes the form of
an idol, and that is why there
is so little power in the church
today. 52Manuscript 2, 1893.
The second commandment forbids
the worship of the true God by
images or similitudes.... The mind,
turned away from the infinite
perfection of Jehovah, would be
attracted to the creature rather
than to the Creator. 53
3.
Thou shalt not take the name of
the Lord thy God in vain; for
the Lord will not hold him
guiltless that taketh his name in
vain.
It is often broken by professed
Christians, and that too in their
prayers. We have heard people
pray, by whom almost every
sentence was introduced with the
name of the Lord. In fact, in some
instances about the only use of
that name in their prayers, after the
first personal address, seemed to be
simply as a catch-word, and was in
every sense of the word taking the
name of the Lord in vain. Its use, in
such cases, is purposeless so far as
any idea of reverence, or any just
conception of the holiness
Such a practice is a violation of the third
commandment, and such prayers are sinful. The
practice is plainly forbidden by the Saviour in his
instructions on the subject of prayer: “When ye
pray, use not vain repetitions.” Matthew 6:7.
And to use the name of the Lord at the
beginning of every sentence, or of every
alternate sentence, is nothing else than “vain
repetition,” and is sin.
We do not say that every repetition of the
name is vain, nor that to repeat the name
more than once in a prayer of considerable
length and fervency would be sinful, because
such a thing might be done with becoming
reverence. In Jacob’s prayer when he was
“greatly afraid and distressed” because of his
fear of Esau, the name of God is not used at all
after the address to him at the beginning.
It is so also in the prayer of Abraham’s
servant. Genesis 24:12-14. In Solomon’s long
prayer at the dedication of the temple the
name of the Lord is only used ten times.
2 Chronicles 6:14-42. In the prayer of Moses
which occupies the whole of the ninetieth
psalm—seventeen verses—the name is used
but four times. In David’s deeply penitential
prayer—the fifty-first psalm—he uses the holy

In Ezra’s most sorrowful prayer the

Ezra 9:6-15. In the longest prayer in
the Bible the sacred name is used only

of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, he used
The prayer in which that name is used the
most of any in the Bible is Daniel’s of the
ninth chapter, when he was earnestly
pleading for an understanding of the word
of the Lord—a prayer that ended in a holy
vision with the angel Gabriel talking to him.
There the name is used seventeen times.
Now we believe it a perfectly safe rule to follow,
that unless our prayers shall exceed these both
in length and fervency, the name of the Lord
should not be used more than it is in these. In
fact, the model which the Saviour gave does not
use the holy name at all except in the form of
address, “Our Father, which art in Heaven,” and
then says, “hallowed be thy name.”
Matthew 6:9-13.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in
it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy
daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy
cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea,
and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day:
wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed
it.
The fourth commandment is explicit.
We are not to do our own work upon
the Sabbath. God has given man six
days for labor, but He has reserved the
seventh to Himself, and He has
pronounced a blessing upon those who
keep it holy.
On the sixth day all needful preparation for the
Sabbath is to be made.... All purchases should be
made and all our cooking should be done on Friday.

Honour thy father and thy

the Lord thy God giveth
The obligation resting upon children to
honor their parents is of lifelong
duration. If the parents are feeble and
old, the affection and attention of the
children should be bestowed in
proportion to the need of father and
mother. Nobly, decidedly,
the children should shape their
course of action even if it requires
self-denial, so that every thought
of anxiety and perplexity may be
removed from the minds of the
parents....
Let children carefully remember that
at the best the aged parents have but
little joy and comfort. What can bring
greater sorrow to their hearts than
manifest neglect on the part of their
children? What sin can be worse in
children than to bring grief to an aged,
6.
Thou shalt not kill.
All acts of injustice that tend to shorten
life; the spirit of hatred and revenge, or
the indulgence of any passion that
leads to injurious acts toward others, or
causes us even to wish them harm (for
“whosoever hateth his brother is a
murderer”);
a selfish neglect of caring for the
needy or suffering; all self-indulgence
or unnecessary deprivation or
excessive labor that tends to injure
health—all these are, to a greater or
less degree, violations of the sixth
commandment. PP 308.5
7.
Thou shalt not commit
adultery
This commandment forbids not only acts of
impurity, but sensual thoughts and desires, or
any practice that tends to excite them. Purity is
demanded not only in the outward life but in the
secret intents and emotions of the heart. Christ,
who taught the far-reaching obligation of the law
of God, declared the evil thought or look to be
as truly sin as is the unlawful deed. PP 306.7
8.
Thou shalt not steal.”
Both public and private sins are
included in this prohibition. The eighth
commandment condemns manstealing
and slave dealing, and forbids wars of
conquest. It condemns theft and
robbery. It demands strict integrity in
the minutest
details of the affairs of life. It forbids
overreaching in trade, and requires the
payment of just debts or wages. It
declares that every attempt to advantage
oneself by the ignorance, weakness, or
misfortune of another is registered as
fraud in the books of heaven. PP 309.1
9.
Thou shalt not bear false
witness against thy
neighbor.”
False speaking in any matter, every attempt or
purpose to deceive our neighbor, is here
included. An intention to deceive is what
constitutes falsehood. By a glance of the eye,
a motion of the hand, an expression of the
countenance, a falsehood may be told as
effectually as by words. All intentional
overstatement, every hint or insinuation
calculated to convey an erroneous or
even the statement of facts in such a
manner as to mislead, is falsehood. This
precept forbids every effort to injure our
neighbor's reputation by
misrepresentation or evil surmising, by
slander or tale bearing. Even the
intentional suppression of truth, by which
injury may result to others, is a violation
10.
Thou shalt not covet thy
neighbor's house, thou shalt not
covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his
manservant, nor his maidservant,
nor his ox, nor his ass, nor
anything that is thy neighbor's.”
The tenth commandment strikes at the very
root of all sins, prohibiting the selfish desire,
from which springs the sinful act. He who in
obedience to God's law refrains from
indulging even a sinful desire for that which
belongs to another will not be guilty of an
act of wrong toward his fellow creatures. PP

Fleshpot Manna
When the God of Israel brought His
people out of Egypt, He withheld flesh
meats from them in a great measure,
but gave them bread from heaven and
water from the flinty rock. With this
they were not satisfied. They loathed

They preferred to endure slavery, and

As the priest, in removing the sins

Christ will place all these sins upon

The darkness of the darkest night, the
secrecy of all deceptive arts, is not
sufficient to veil one thought from the
knowledge of the Eternal. God has an

He is not deceived by appearances of
piety. He makes no mistakes in His

heart, but God pierces all disguises and

Some who believe the truth may think that
it would be more healthful for the sisters to
adopt the American costume, yet if that
mode of dress would cripple our influence
among unbelievers so that we could not so
readily gain access to them, we should by
no means adopt it, though we suffered
much in consequence.
There is an increasing tendency to have
women in their dress and appearance as
near like the other sex as possible, and to
fashion their dress very much like that of
men, but God pronounces it abomination.
‘In like manner also, that women adorn
themselves in modest apparel, with
shamefacedness and sobriety.’
Shamefacedness

With the so-called dress reform there goes a
spirit of levity (lack of Respect)and boldness
just in keeping with the dress. Modesty
and reserve seem to depart from many as
they adopt that style of dress. I was shown
that God would have us take a course
consistent and explainable. Let the sisters
adopt the American costume and they would
destroy their own influence and that of their
Christians should not take pains to make
themselves a gazing-stock by dressing
differently from the world. But if, when
following out their convictions of duty in
respect to dressing modestly and healthfully,
they find themselves out of fashion, they
should not change their dress in order to be
like the world;
Our Saviour says: ‘Ye are the light of the
world.’ ‘Let your light so shine before men,
that they may see your good works, and
glorify your Father which is in heaven.’ There
is a great work for us to do in the world, and
God would not have us take a course to

world.”
If the world introduce a modest,
convenient, and healthful mode of
dress, which is in accordance with
the Bible, it will not change our
relation to God or to the world to
adopt such a style of dress.
Christians should follow Christ and
make their dress conform to God's
word. They should shun extremes.
They should humbly pursue a
straightforward course, irrespective of
applause or of censure, and should
cling to the right because of its own

True Revival 12.2
In 1844 our great High Priest entered
the most holy place of the heavenly
sanctuary, to begin the work of the
investigative judgment. The cases of
the righteous dead have been
passing in review before God.
When that work shall be
completed, judgment is to be
pronounced upon the living. How
precious, how important are these
solemn moments! Each of us has
a case pending in the court of
heaven.
We are individually to be judged according
to the deeds done in the body. In the
typical service, when the work of
atonement was performed by the high
priest in the most holy place of the earthly
sanctuary, the people were required to
afflict their souls before God, and confess
their sins, that they might be atoned for

the final, irrevocable decision is to
be pronounced upon every case?
