IELTS
What is it?
IELTS = the International English Language Testing System

• designed to assess the language ability of people who want to study or work
where English is the language of communication
• recognised and accepted by over 12,000 organisations in more than 150
countries worldwide, including universities, employers, professional bodies,
immigration authorities and other government agencies
• aimed at people who want to study in an English-speaking environment, work
in or emigrate to an English-speaking country, or get a job in their own
country where English proficiency is required
• four million people take the test every year

IELTS assesses the four key skills:

 Listening
 Reading
 Writing
 Speaking
IELTS Academic and General Training: key facts

• Test length: 2 hours and 45 minutes long

• Test format: 4 sections, Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking

• The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections take place on the same
day with no breaks in between.

• The Speaking section may be scheduled on the same day or up to 7


days before or after the other sections
How to register?
You can book the test online
Registration fee:

 $ 190, on paper, $ 195 computer, with IDP in Phnom Penh.

 $ 185, on computer, with British Council & SpringBoard4 Education


in Phnom Penh.
Results:

• all IELTS scores are between 0 and 9 with .5 scores as well, like 6.5, 7.5
• a band score for each skill: reading, writing, listening and speaking
• the overall band score is the average score of all the skills
• each score is rounded up or down to the nearest .5 or whole score
• when you do the test on computer, you will have the result in 3 – 5 days.
• the result stays valid for 2 years
• you can take the test per segment if you want to improve your result for that
particular segment, which will also improve your overall result.
What is behind your band score?

• listening and reading sections: 40 questions each

• each correct response earns one mark

• the accumulated score out of 40 is then converted to the IELTS 9-band scale.

• there are no negative marks for incorrect answers

• for the speaking section, IELTS certified examiners will conduct a face-to-face evaluation

• evaluation of the writing section is based on fluency, coherence and cohesion, lexical
variety and grammatical accuracy.
