Unit vector, displacement vector,
traingle law of addition,
parallelogram law of addition,
polygon law of addition and Dot
product
How to write a vector ?

A =
Unit vector :- Those vector whose
magnitude is unity(1) and fix direction. A unit
vector has no dimensions and unit .

Unit vector along the +ve x,y,z axis of a

rectangular coordinate system are denoted by
i, j and k such that :-
|i|=|j|=|k|=1
i=
j=
k=
28. How many unit vector we can have?

29. How many rectangular unit vector we can

have?
In general
30. Find OA,|OA| and OA?
Displacement vector
31. A particle moves 3m due west, 4m due
south finally 12 m vertically up. The distance
and magnitude of displacement travelled by
the particle are?
Traingle law of addition
Statement:- when two vector are placed on
adjacent sides of a traingle in an order, then the
resultant of these two vector is shown by the third
side of traingle in opposite order.
Parallelogram law of addition
Statement:- When two vector are are placed
along the adjacent sides of a parallelogram
coinitially then the resultant of these two vector is
shown by the diagonal of parallelogram.
R=

tan
Polygon law of vector
If vector alligned along the adjacent
sides of a polygon in an order. The
resultant of all these vector is
represented by a single vector from
initial to final.

Or
If n vector represent successive sides of a
polygon then (n+1)th side in opposite directions
represent sum of all vector.
Important points
A. To a vector only a vector of same type can
be added that represent the same physical
quantity and the resultant is a vector of the
same type.
B. As R= so R will be
maximum,when cosθ=1 (max) i.e. θ=00 .
Vector are like or parallel and Rmax= A+B.
C. The resultant will be minimum if cosθ=
-1 , θ=1800. i.e. Vector are antiparallel
and Rmin=A-B.
D. If the vector A and Are orthogonal i.e.
θ=900 then R=

E. Minimum number of unequal coplanar

vector whose sum can be zero is three .
32. Find the resultant of two vector having
equal magnitude F0 and angle between them is
θ?
DOT PRODUCT (SCALAR PRODUCT)
Let A=
B=
and angle between them is θ.
Then ,
A.B=
Cosθ=
Orthogonal unit vector
i.i=j.j=k.k=1
i.j=j.k=k.i=0

Only vector are given then,

A=
B=

A.B= a1b1+a2b2+a3b3
Important points
1. It is commutative A.B=B.A
2. It is distributive A.(B+C)= A.B+A.
3. Scalar product of two vector will be
maximum when cosθ=1 i.e. θ =00 , vector
are parallel.
4. If A.B=0 i.e. Vector are perpendicular.
5. The scalar product of a vector by itself is
termed as self Dot product is given by
A.A=|A||A| cosθ = A2cosθ=A2cos0= A2.
Components of vector
Components of r on x-axis

Components of r on y-axis
33. What is the angle between i+j+k and j ?
A. 00 B. 450 C. 600 D. None of these
34. For what value of x will be the two vector
A=2i+2j-xk and B= 2i-j-3k are perpendicular to
each other?
A. x= -2/3
B. x=3/2
C. x= -4/3
D. x = 2/3
35. Find angle between A=3i+4j and B=12i+5j ?
36.Find the projection of the vector
A=2i+3j+2k on the vector B= i+2j+3k ?
37. For what value of m, A= 2i+3j-6k is

38. The angle between the two vector A=
3i+4j+5k and B=3i+4j-5k will be
A. 00 B.1800 C. 900 D. 450
39. The work done by a force F=(i+2j+3k) N to
displace a body from position A to position B . [
The position vector of A= (I+3j+k)m and the
position vector of B=(2i+2j+3k)m ] ?
40. The work done by a force F during a
displacement r is given by F.r , suppose a force
of 12 N acts on a particle in vertically upward
direction and the particle is displaced through
2.0 m in vertically downward direction. Find
the work done by the force during this
displacement?
