Major Agencies of the United Nations
UN has specialized agencies through which it operates.
Purpose of setting up the UN Agencies
To promote progress and better standards of life in larger freedom.
At present UNO has 15 specialized agencies.
Some of the specialised agencies are:
1) UNICEF-United nations International Children’s Emergency Fund or United Nations Children’s
Fund.
2) UNESCO: United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
3) WHO: World Health Organisation.
4) ILO: International Labour Organisation.

1) United nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF):


Also known as United Nations Children’s Fund.
Established: 1946
Headquarters: New York (USA).
Major Agencies of the United Nations

Reason: to give relief to the children and their mothers


immediately after the second world war.
Current Aim: improve the quality of life of children and
women in developing countries

Its Functions:
1. To assist countries in providing protective food like mild, meat, fish, fats etc. to the
children.
2. To provide funds for training of health and sanitation workers and creche workers.
3. To undertake child immunization projects in order to prevent diseases.
4. To extend support to programmes such as suppression of traffic in women and children
and prevention of crimes committed by children.

5. To provide instant help to women and children in emergencies arising from natural
calamities and epidemics.
6. To supply paper to publish textbooks and literature relating to children.
UNICEF celebrated 1979 as the ‘International year of the Child’ to focus attention on the
rights and welfare of children.

2) United Nations Educational Scientific and cultural organisation (UNESCO):


Established: 1946.
Headquarters: Paris.
Purpose: To contribute to peace and security in the world by promoting collaboration among
nations through education, science, culture and communication.
Major Agencies of the United Nations
Functions:
a) Education:
I. Removal of illiteracy by encouragement to adult
education distance education and open school system.
II. Emphasis on education of women and girls.
III. Financial assistance for the education of women and
girls.
IV. it organises book fairs and festivals at international and
national levels.
V. Development of library system is an important
component of continuing education.
VI. It provides advice and expert assistance in matters like
schools construction and preparation of courses of study
and textbooks.
VII. It provides fellowships and study grants to teacher and
scholars.

b) Development of Science and Technology:
I. UNESCO promotes basic research in fields like
geology, mathematics physics and oceanography.
II. It organises seminars and conferences of scientists
of various countries and circulates information
through journals, press and exhibitions.
III. It encourages the study of social sciences, in order
to focus attention on the factors causing violence or
conflicts.
IV. Helps to improve communication in developing
countries.

c) Cultural Interchange and Preservation of
Cultural Heritage:
I. It helps the member-states in the
preservation of their cultural heritage.
II. It encourages the translation of rare
manuscripts.
III. It plays an important role in distributing
knowledge about the human rights.
IV. It promotes artistic creation in literature
and fine arts.
V. To protect monument of historic and
artistic interest.
VI. It pays attention towards the cultural
development through the medium of
films.

3) World Health Organization (WHO):
Established: 7th April, 1948. 7th April is celebrated as World Health Day..
Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland.
Objective: Attainment of the highest possible level of health by all
people
Functions: Logo of WHO
I. To promote and coordinate researches in the fields of communicable diseases, maternal
and mental health and diseases like cancer, blindness, diabetes and heart attacks.
II. It gives important drugs needed for medical care.
III. It promotes research to cure and prevent diseases.
IV. It works towards providing safe drinking water and adequate waste disposal.
V. Organizes conferences, seminars and training for health care personnel from different
countries.
VI. It helps fight diseases everywhere in the world.
VII.Publish health journals like Bulletin of the world.
