Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Objectives
• To understand what is meant by the transmission of data
• To distinguish between serial and parallel data transmission
• To understand the reasons for choosing serial or parallel data transmission.
• To distinguish between simplex, duplex and half-duplex data transmission
Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Starter
• In your own words describe what data transmission is.
• What are the different ways/ methods in which data is transmitted
Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Starter Answer
Data transmission
• Data transmission refers to the movement of data in the form of bits between
two or more digital devices.
• Data can be transferred from one point to another using various methods:
Wired connection-
• Copper cable using electrical pulses
• Optical fibre using light
Wirelessly
• radio waves
• Infrared
• Microwaves
Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Methods of Data transmission

• Serial
• Parallel
Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Serial transmission
• Bits are sent one signal at a time over a single wire
• Very high data transfer rates can be achieved
• Using fibre-optic cable, data transfer rates ranging from around 50 Megabits per
second (Mbs) to 100 Gigabits per second (Gbs) can be achieved
• Used with USB (Universal Serial Bus) cables

Example – Sending data from a computer to a modem for transmission over

telephone line.
Can you think of any advantages and disadvantages of serial transmission
Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Parallel transmission
• Signals (bits) are sent simultaneously over a number of parallel wires
• Why might parallel be faster than serial transmission?
Data transmission

Task 1
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

1. Define serial and parallel data transmission in your own words.

Task 1
• 3. Disadvantages
Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Advantages and Disadvantages of serial data

transmission
Advantages
• This method of data transmission works well over long distances.
• Since only one wire or channel is used, there is no problem of data
arriving at its destination out of synchronisation.
Disadvantages
• Data is transmitted at a slower rate than parallel data transmission.
• Requires additional encoding and decoding

Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Advantages and Disadvantages of parallel data

transmission
Advantage
• Works well with shorter distances,
• Faster method of data transmission than serial

Disadvantage
• Over longer distances the bits can be skewed(no longer be synchronized)
• Requires more hardware and wiring
Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Skew
• Each wire in a parallel cable has slightly different properties
• Signals travel down wires at different speeds

• Transmission must be over very short distances to reduce the problem

Computer data ribbons

• Known as Parallel ATA Cables
• Used inside the computer
to connect components
and drives
• Use 8, 16 or 32 bits
sent down
separate lines
Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Advantages of serial over parallel

transmission
• Smaller, simpler and cheaper connectors such as those used for
smartphones
• “Crosstalk” creates interference between parallel lines, and can result
in corrupted words which then need to be retransmitted
• Serial links are more reliable over much greater distances than
parallel links

Task 2 – Determine whether the following

statements are true or false
True False
Serial transmission is faster than parallel transmission
Parallel transmission is more susceptible to interference and
data corruption than serial transmission
Serial transmission requires fewer wires or channels
compared to parallel transmission
In parallel transmission, all bits of a data word are sent
simultaneously over separate channels

Direction of Data Transmission

• Simplex
• Duplex
• Half-duplex
Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Simplex transmission
• Data travels in one direction only
• Used for sending data from a keyboard to the CPU
Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Half-duplex transmission
• Data can travel in both directions along a single cable, but not
simultaneously
• Used in parallel printer cables: text is sent to a printer, and the printer can send ‘Out
of paper’ messages back, but only when the computer has finished sending text
Data transmission
Unit 2 Communication and Internet technologies

Full duplex transmission

• Data can travel in both directions simultaneously using two cables
• Commonly used in fibre optical networking or Internet cables for upload and
download
