Quadratic Function
A relation written in the form y = ax 2+ bx + c where
a, b, and c are real numbers and a 0 is called a
quadratic function written in standard form.
Alternatively, it can also be written as f(x) = ax 2 +
bx + c. The expression f(x) is read as "f of x" or
"function of x.”
Determine whether the following functions are quadratic or
not. State the coefficients of the quadratic function in the
form y = a + bx + c.
Thus, the resulting function is quadratic where a = 1,
b = 0, and c = 30.

Vertex Form of a Quadratic Function

A quadratic function in standard form can also be

written in another form such as the vertex form. This
form is written as y = a(x - h)2 + k where a, h, and k
are real numbers and a 0, The method of completing
the square is used in rewriting a quadratic function
from standard form to vertex form.
Steps in transforming standard form to vertex form:
1. Group the first two terms
2. Complete the square
3. Factor and simplify

Generalization
• There are many situations in the real world that can be
modeled or mathematically described by the quadratic
function. Skill to do this can be useful to make estimates
of one variable from known values of the related variable
or to make predictions of the relationship between the
same two variables in a different situation.
• A quadratic function is a polynomial function of degree 2,
which means its highest exponent of the variable x is 2.
