What is curriculum change?

Curriculum change refers to the process of modifying, revising, or entirely overhauling


an existing educational curriculum. It involves altering aspects such as the structure,
content, teaching methods, assessment strategies, or learning outcomes to improve the
quality and relevance of education.

Curriculum change can take various forms:


 Complete Change: A total redesign of the curriculum.
 Partial Change: Modifications to specific components or sections.
 Factor-Specific Change: Adjustments to a particular element, like teaching methods
 or assessment strategies.
Importance/ Need of Curriculum Change

How does it get accepted?

1.Awareness: Inform everyone about the change.

Types of Curriculum Change

1. Complete Change
 Definition: A total overhaul of the curriculum, replacing the existing framework
with a new one.
 Examples:
o Shifting from a traditional subject-based curriculum to a competency-based
curriculum.
o Adopting entirely new teaching methods, materials, and assessment systems.
 When to Use:
o When the current curriculum is outdated or fails to meet the educational
goals.
o To align with major reforms, such as a new national education policy.
. Partial Change
 Definition: Modifications to specific sections or components of the curriculum,
keeping the overall structure intact.
 Examples:
o Updating the science syllabus to include emerging topics like artificial
intelligence.
o Revising assessment methods to include more project-based evaluations.
 When to Use:
o When certain parts of the curriculum need improvement while others
remain effective.
o To introduce incremental changes without disrupting the system.
3. Change in a Specific Factor
 Definition: Adjustments to a single element or factor within the curriculum without
altering the content.
 Examples:
o Changing the medium of instruction.
o Incorporating technology, such as using digital tools for teaching.
o Focusing on skill development rather than rote learning.
 When to Use:
o To address a specific issue, such as low engagement or accessibility.
o To experiment with innovative methods before broader changes.
