BACKGROUND
Background on Active and Passive Transport

The cell membrane plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis by regulating the movement of
substances in and out of the cell. This movement is necessary for:
• Nutrient absorption.
• Waste removal.
• Maintaining ion balance and communication.

Passive Transport involves the movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to low
concentration without energy use (e.g., diffusion, osmosis).

Active Transport, on the other hand, requires energy (ATP) to move molecules against their
concentration gradient (e.g., sodium-potassium pump).

These processes are fundamental to the survival and functioning of cells.

PROJECT GOALS
3. Explore
1 1. Explain the 2 examples of
structure and transport
function of the cell mechanisms in
membrane. cells

2. Differentiate 4. Highlight the

between active and importance of
passive transport. transport in
maintaining cellular
homeostasis.
TITLE SLIDE

• Title: Active and Passive

Transport Across the
Cell
• Subtitle: A Journey Through
Cellular Mechanisms
INTRODUCTION
• Title: What is Cellular Transport?
• Content:
• The cell membrane controls the movement of
substances in and out of the cell to maintain
balance.
• Two types of transport:
• Passive (no energy required)
• Active (requires energy in the form of ATP)
THE CELL MEMBRANE
• Title: The Gatekeeper of the Cell
• Content:
• The cell membrane is semi-
permeable and made of a
phospholipid bilayer with embedded
proteins.
• Acts as a selective barrier.
PASSIVE TRANSPORT
• Title: Energy-Free Transport
• Content:
• Movement from high to low concentration.
• Examples:
• Diffusion: Gases like oxygen move directly
across the membrane.
• Facilitated Diffusion: Molecules pass through
protein channels.
• Osmosis: Water moves across the membrane.
ACTIVE TRANSPORT
Title: The Energy-Powered Transport
• Content:
• Movement against the concentration gradient
(low to high).
• Requires ATP (cellular energy).
• Examples:
• Sodium-Potassium Pump: Maintains ion balance.
• Endocytosis and Exocytosis: Large molecule
transport.
SIDE-BY-SIDE
COMPARISON
WHY IT MATTERS
Title: The Importance of Cellular Transport
• Content:
• Ensures nutrient absorption (e.g.,
glucose uptake).
• Eliminates waste (e.g., carbon dioxide
removal).
• Maintains ion balance and homeostasis.
CONCLUSION
.Title: Wrapping It Up
• Summarize:
• Passive transport is energy-free and moves
substances down the gradient.
• Active transport requires ATP and works
against the gradient.
• Thought-provoking question: How do diseases
affect these transport systems?
