E – WASTE
What is E-waste ?
Electronic waste, commonly known as e-waste,
includes all discarded electrical and electronic
equipment (EEE) and its components that have
been disposed of by the owner without the intention
of reuse (Step Initiative 2014).

E-waste is also known as WEEE (Waste Electrical

and Electronic Equipment), electronic waste, or e-
scrap, depending on the region and circumstances. It
covers a wide array of products, including almost any
household or business item containing circuitry or
electrical components powered by electricity or
batteries.

Why E-waste is
important
E-waste is important because it
contains toxic materials that can
harm the environment and
human health if not handled
properly. Recycling e-waste helps
conserve valuable resources, reduce
pollution, and create economic
opportunities by recovering materials
like metals. Proper management also
prevents electronic devices from
filling up landfills, promoting

2. Screens monitors : Tv , Laptop , Mobiles ,

monitors, notebook , tablets .

3.Lamps : high intensity discharge lamps , LED

lamps.

4.Large equipment: Washing machine , clothes

dryers, dish washing machine , electric stoves , large
printing machines , copying equipment.

5.Small equipment : vacuum cleaner , microwaves ,

toasters , electric kettle, electric shaver , calculator ,
radio sets , video cameras, electrical toys , small
electronic tools , small medical devices, small

Climate
Changes
1 . Greenhouse gas emissions : Improperly disposed of e-waste can release
greenhouse gases (GHGs). A UCI study found that e-waste GHG emissions
increased by 53% between 2014 and 2020.

2. Energy consumption : Recycling e-waste instead of producing new materials

can reduce energy consumption and associated emissions.

3. Demand for new devices : When electronics are destroyed, the demand for more
increases, which leads to more energy and natural resource use during
manufacturing and transportation.

4.Methane emissions Recycling : e-waste from landfills reduces methane

emissions, which are 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide at trapping

heat in the atmosphere.

2.Water Pollution -: Highlights how e-waste enters

water bodies, releasing toxic chemicals and
heavy metals, harming aquatic life .

3.Air Pollution : Represents how e-waste

incineration and recycling processes release harmful
air pollutants, affecting human health.

How to disposal e – waste proper
way
• Drop electronics at designated e – waste recycle centers near
you.
• Donate working electronics to schools, orphanages or non-
profit organization.
• Trade old gadgets for discounts on new electronics at stores.

• Transform discarded electronics into creative , sustainable

development artwork.
• Repurpose e- waste into useful creations, cutting environmental
impact and giving old items new life
