CLIMATE
Let’s start with the first topic
CLIMATE
The scientists called ‘Meteorologists' record
the weather at various places everyday.
These records help the Meteorologists to
determine the weather pattern at a place.
The average weather pattern at a place taken
over a long period of time (say,25 years) is
called the climate of that place.
For example, if the temperature at a place is
high most of the time, then we say that the
climate is hot.

There are 4 types of climate in the world :
POLAR CLIMATE
TEMPERATURE CLIMATE
TROPICAL CLIMATE
DESERT CLIMATE
Climate (from ANCIENT GREEK ‘INCLINATION’)
is commonly over period.

TYPES OF CLIMATE
There are 4 major types of climates in the world:
Polar climate
Temperate climate
Tropical climate
Desert climate
1. Polar climate The polar climate regions are characterized by a
lack of warm summers but with varying winters. Every month in a
polar climate has an average temperature of less than 10 °C (50
°F). polar climate is very cold. The air is so cold in the polar
regions of the earth that water falls there as snow and not as the
rain.
2. Temperate climate A climate which is neither very hot in
7 summer nor very cold in winter is called temperate climate. In
3. Tropical climate A tropical climate is
identified as a climate characteristic to the
tropics; that is from the equator to the
Tropic of Capricorn in the south and from
the Equator to the Tropic of Cancer in the
north. A climate having very high
temperature and high humidity is called
tropical climate. Thus , tropical climate is
very hot and humid there is usually lot of
rain in tropical climate.
4. Desert climate Desert climate is very
hot during the day. There is little rain in
the desert areas so the desert climate is
also dry. Thus, desert climate is very hot
and dry
8
⪢ Every place on earth has its own climate.
⪢ Our climate depends on our position o the earth and
our distance from the sun.
⪢ The climate is different at different places around the
world because these are not heated equally by the
sun.
⪢ The regions around the equator of the earth , called
tropical regions of the earth(where the sun shines
directly overhead) get the maximum heat from the sun
and have a very hot climate.
⪢ As a region gets more and more away from the
equator (towards the poles), the amount of sun’s heat
received by the region goes on decreasing , leading to
gradual cooler climate.
9
• The poles of the earth are at the
maximum distance from the sun.
Due to this, the sun’s rays have to
travel much more to reach to polar
regions of the earth, which makes
them lose much of their heat.
• The polar regions of the earth(near
north pole and south pole of
earth)receive the minimum amount
of sun’s heat , so the polar regions
of earth have an extremely cold
climate.
• Thus, the tropical regions and
polar regions are the two regions
of the earth which have extreme
climatic conditions.

2.
Factors with
effect climate.
Let’s start with the second topic
FACTORS WHICH AFFECT CLIMATE
i. TEMPERATURE and RAINFALL are the two important factors of
climate.
ii. ALTITUDE-It means the distance above the sea level. A place at
higher altitude will have a cooler climate than another place on
plains.
iii. LOCATION WITH RESPECT TO THE SEA- Sea - water heats up
slowly and cools down slowly . This has a moderating effect on the
climate of coastal areas. The temperature in coastal areas are
neither high nor very low.
13
The most important natural
factors are:
Distance from the sea
Ocean currents
Direction of prevailing
winds
Shape of the land
Distance from the
equator
14
MEAN TEMPERATURE
A mean temperature describesthe the average temperature for the the 24 –
hour day.
HOW DO WE FIND THE MEAN TEMPERATURE FOR A MONTH ?
The mean temperature given for a month can be found in two steps:
1. First find the average temperature record during the month.
2. Calculate the ‘average’ of such ‘average temperature’ over many years.
o This gives us the mean temperature for the month.
o The mean temperature are found for the ‘maximum’ as well as the
‘minimum’ temperatute for the month.

Whoa! That’s a big number, aren’t you proud?
• In Srinagar, the temperatures round the year
are neither very low nor very high.
• The rainfall is neither very low nor very high.
• Srinagar has a moderately hot and wet climate.
• Hence, Jammu and Kashmir has a moderately
hot and wet climate.
• It is like a temperate climate.
• In Thiruvananthapuram the temperatures round
the year are quite high.
• The rainfall is very high.
• Thiruvananthapuram has a very hot and wet
climate.
• Hence, Kerala has a very hot and wet climate.
• Kerala has a typical tropical climate.
RAJASTHAN : WESTERN REGION OF India
The temperature is very high during most of the days of the year , so it is
very hot .
In winter the temperature becomes low (winter lasts only for a few months
in Rajasthan).
As Rajasthan receives less rainfall, it is dry . Hence the climate of Rajasthan
is hot and dry.
This is a typical dessert climate.
North-east India receives rain in most parts of the year, hence the climate of
north-east india is wet.
