GRAPHING LINEAR
INEQUALITIES IN
TWO VARIABLES
Lesson Objectives
1.Solve and plot linear inequalities
in two variables using the
intercept method; and
2.Graph linear inequalities in two
variables using Desmos graphing
application.
Graphing Linear Inequalities in two variables
The graph of any linear
inequality in two variables is
a HALF-PLANE.
- the shaded region consist of
the points whose coordinates
satisfy the inequality.
Graphing Linear Inequalities in two variables
To graph linear inequality:
1.Graph the related linear equation. The
related equation has an equal sign in place
of the inequality symbol. If the inequality
symbol is , then draw a solid line. If the
inequality symbol is , then draw a dashed
line.
Graphing Linear Inequalities in two variables
To graph linear inequality:
2. Choose an ordered pair on one side of the
boundary line ( line of the equation) and test this
ordered pair in the inequality. If the ordered pair
satisfies the inequality, then the shade contains it.
If the ordered pair does not satisfy the inequality,
then shade the region on the other side of the
boundary line.

Graph 2x-y
Rewrite the inequality as an equation. Pick a test point.
2x-y=4 Use (0,0) if possible.
Solve and plot the intercepts.
2x – y = 4 2x – y = 4
2x- 0 = 4 2(0) – y =4
2x = 4 -y = 4
X= 2 y=-4
x intercept is 2 y intercept is -4
