Introduction
In this English Coursework I will talk about a cultural custom
of Spain. Propably in the first page you saw some
tomatos smashed and this is my theme called: La
Tomatina.
My goal is to arouse curiosity about this tomato fight,
which is a little strange for us.
I hope you enjoy my apresentation, so let’s see it.
How started?
The beginning of the “battle” of tomatoes in Buñol has an uncertain
origin. The most accepted theory is that, during the Gigantes Y
Cabezudos parade in 1945, some young people decided to stage a fight in
the Plaza del Pueblo and the closest ammunition they had was tomatoes.
The police acted and forced the participants to pay for the tomatoes.
The following year they returned, on the same Wednesday and with their
own tomatoes, only to confront each other again and be dispersed by the
police again. But the next year, there they were again. And so the party
began to become a custom. After some bans happened, but everything
worked out. In 1980, the Town Hall of Buñol took over the organization of
the event and there was a never ending tomato.
Where is Buñol?
Bunõl is a municipality in Spain in
the province of Valencia
“La Tomatina” Every year
It all starts at 9 am, in Plaza del Pueblo, and people and more people
arrive for the party to start. A large pole is then erected, full of soap, like
a tallow stick, and on top of it, a large ham. The most excited try to climb
to reach their prize. Meanwhile, from the balconies of the houses, people
throw buckets of water on the participants of the Tomatina.
At 11 am the first gunshot sounds to announce the beginning of the mess
and that's when the first truck loaded with tomatoes arrives and dumps
them down the street. Shortly afterwards, everyone is already red with
tomato sauce and other shipments of “ammunition” arrive. Until the
second shot sounds and it's the end of the Tomatina. Not exactly the end,
since now the “combatants” will be hosed down right there on the street.
The rules of the Battle
Like any civilized environment, there are rules here to avoid accidents and
maintain a festive and friendly atmosphere among everyone.
• You cannot take bottles or any object that could cause accidents;
• T-shirts, clothes cannot be torn apart;
• Tomatoes must be crushed before being thrown to prevent them from
injuring anyone;
• You must give way and respect the flow of trucks;
• At the second shot, no tomato should be thrown.
Simple and objective. This way everyone will be able to have fun without
major problems and will be able to participate in this traditional Spanish party.
