Temperature or Thermal Energy
The particles that everything is made from are always moving.
The energy stored in the movement of the particles is called
internal energy. It is sometimes called thermal energy or
‘heat’ energy. We measure this in joules(J).
Temperature describes how hot or cold an object is. It is
usually measured in degrees Celsius (oC).

Temperature or
Thermal Energy?
Look at Fig.1, both containers
contain boiling water (Water
boils at 100oC). Meaning they
both have the same
temperature, but they have
different amounts of internal
energy. Why is this?
Because the flask contains a
larger amount of water than
the cup it requires more energy
to maintain the same temp.

Teach
Temperature or Thermal Energy
Energy stored in substances can be transferred by heating.
Energy flows from hotter objects to a cooler one. The bigger
the difference in temperature, the faster the energy is
transferred. The cool object comes hotter and the hot object
becomes cooler until they are both the same temperature.

The Lemonade Question
Jenna has a glass of iced lemonade.
Complete these sentences by crossing out the
words that are wrong.
The lemonade is (warmer/cooler) than the air in the room.
Energy will flow from the (lemonade/air) in the room to the
(lemonade/air) in the room. The temperature of the
lemonade will go (up/down) and the temperature of the air
in the room will go (up/down).

Evaporation
Humans use sweating as a method of cooling their bodies. The
sweat that is produced on the surface of the skin, absorbs heat
from the body and then takes it away when the sweat
evaporates.
Your task is to investigate the aim
below and see whether sweating
does really cool down the body.
