Simulation

• Simulation is the next best thing to observing

a real system in observation.
• Simulation is not an optimization technique.
It is the technique for estimating the
measures of performance of the modeled
system.
• The output of simulation is subject to random
variations.
• Monte Carlo simulation refers to the use of
random sampling to estimate the output of an
experiment.
Example 1:
The tit fit scientific laboratories is
engaged in producing different
types of high class equipment for
use in science laboratories. The
company has two different
assembly lines to produce its most
popular product ‘Pressure’. The
processing time of each of the
assembly lines is regarded as a
random variable and is described by
the following distribution process
Process Time Assembly A1 Assembly A2
(minutes)
10 0.10 0.20

11 0.15 0.40

12 0.40 0.20

13 0.25 0.15

14 0.10 0.05
Using the following random numbers, generate data
on the process times for 15 units of the item and
compute the expected time for the product. For the
purpose, read the numbers vertically taking the first
two digits for the processing time on assembly A1,
and the Last two digits for processing time on
assembly A2.

Solution:
In the first stage, we assign random
number intervals to the processing times
on each of the assemblies. This is shown
in this table.

Example 2:
A company manufactured 150 mopeds. The daily
production varies from 146 to 154 depending
upon the availability of raw material and other
working conditions.

The finished mopeds are transported in
a specially arranged lorry
accommodating only 150 mopeds.
Using following random numbers
80,81,76,75,64,43,18,26,10,12,65,68,6
9,61,57.
Simulate the process to find out.
i) What will be the average number of
mopeds waiting in the factory?
ii) What will be average number of
empty spaces on the lorry?
