SECURITY EDUCATION
Definition: Security Education is a study which
exposes us to the knowledge, skill and experience
which is necessary for safety and security.
BENEFIT OF SECURITY EDUCATION
1. Security education exposes us to security
intelligence which enable us to prevent some
security threats.
2. Security education enforces security awareness
in students
3. Security education helps in developing a
practical security strategies
4. Security education enables us to effectively
detect and mitigate threat to political, social,
5. Security education helps to boost the country’s
security
6. To influence better security practices within a
country.
7. Security education helps us to educate others on
various security threats
FUNCTION OF SECURITY EDUCATION
1. To train students on how to protect their selves
from danger
2. To train the students to develop special security
skills in order to be safe in danger situations
3. To make the students aware of the security
threats around them
4. To educate the students on the importance of
safety from personal risk
5. To educate the students on crime and the
punishment to crime there by reducing crime rate

AGENTS THAT PROMOTE SECURITY EDUCATION/ AGENTS OF
SECURITY EDUCATION
Agents that promote security education / agents of
security education are those avenues through which we
learn or acquire security awareness. It also mean those
institutions that provide security awareness to people in
the society. Agent of security education is not the same as
security agents.

CRIME AND COMMON CRIME
MEANING OF CRIME
A crime is an unlawful behaviour display by some
people in society, it can be against a person or
against a property and it is punishable under law.
Criminal offences are usually defined by the
criminal law of each country which is known as the
criminal code. In Nigeria the criminal code is
enshrined in the constitution. Every crime violates
the law but not every violation of the law count as a
crime for instance breaches of private law (tort and
breach of contract) they are not punishable by the
state but can be enforced through civil process
WHAT IS LAW?
Law a set of rules that guide a country or a
place. Breaking the law calls for punishment.
Therefore it is only a law that determine what
a crime is in a country
MEANING OF COMMON CRIME
Common crimes are those crimes committed
frequently in the society, they are based on
their regular occurrences in the society.
CATEGORIES OF CRIME
1. Felony: Felony is a very serious offence which
attract punishment that range from three years to
life imprisonment or even death sentence
2. Misdemeanor: These are lesser crime or minor
crimes. The punishment for offences that belong to
this category in Nigeria range from 6 months of
imprisonment upward but are less than three years
as the case may be.
3. Simple offence: These are offences that do not
carry more than six months imprisonment or option
of fine
