Jockey pump
A jockey pump is a small pump connected to
a fire sprinkler system to maintain pressure
in the sprinkler pipes. This is to ensure that if a
fire-sprinkler is activated, there will be a pressure
drop
FIRE PUMP SEQUENCE OF
DESCRIPTION ACTION
OPERATION
The jockey pump will start and maintain
If the system pressure decrease to the pressure until the pressure
due 107 PSI to any demand reached117PSI.If the pressure reached
above the 117 psi the jockey pump will
stop automatically
If the system pressure decrease to The duty pump will start and maintains the
100 Psi due to increase in the demand pressure at117 psi .The duty pump will be
stop after set time delay
If the system pressure decrease to The stand by pump will start and maintain
90 psi due to the increase in the the pressure 117 psi(If duty pump get any
demand (Also the duty pump fail to failure alarm mode )
operate due to any failure )
NFPA Required Pump accessories
• Pressure gauge, instrument
for measuring the condition of a
fluid (liquid or gas)
Pressure gauge
Air Release Valve
• 1/2” Air Release Valve is required
• Exception: top centre-line discharge
end vertical fire pumps
Pressure Relief Valve
Angle Pressure Relief Valve is designed specifically to automatically relieve
excess pressure in fire protection pumping systems. Pilot controlled, it maintains
constant system pressure at the pump discharge within very close limits as
demands change. At pump start, Cla-Val Relief Valve modulates to relieve excess
pump capacity, maintaining positive system pressure at the pump discharge
Isolation Valves
One type of valve commonly used to control water flow to fire
sprinkler systems is known as an OS&Y gate valve. OS&Y means
“outside stem and yoke” or "outside screw and yoke". OS&Y gate
valves operate by opening and closing via a gate, which lowers into
or rises out of the valve.
Non return valve
A non-return valve allows flow in only one direction , protecting
to the reversed flow
Flow meter
A flow meter is a device used to
measure the volume or mass of a
gas or liquid. Flow meters are referred
to by many names, such as flow gauge,
flow indicator, liquid meter, flow rate
sensor
Test header for fire pump
A test header allows for
the flowing of large
quantities of water
through multiple landing
valve
pressure reducing
When the water enters the regulator at
high pressure, the inner mechanism
constricts the diaphragm to narrow the
flow of water
JOCKEY PUMP REQUIREMENTS &
SIZING - NFPA 20
Pressure Maintenance Pump
(Jockey)
• Every system has a normal leakage rate that will result in a pressure drop
• Jockey Pump will maintain the pressure in the system
• This will prevent the main fire pump from starting for minor leaks
• Jockey (pressure maintenance) pumps and jockey controllers need not be listed for
fire protection service.
• “The primary or standby fire pump shall not be used as a pressure maintenance pump.”
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OF JOCKEY PUMP
A rule of thumb for sizing jockey pump supplying underground piping
is to use 1% of the fire pump rated capacity.
For example:
A fire pump with rated capacity of 2000 gpm.
Then the jockey pump flow rate is 2000 gpm * 1% = 20 gpm
The jockey pump shall not be required to have alternate or standby
power.
VALVES OF JOCKEY PUMP:
An isolation valve shall be installed on the suction side of the jockey
pump to isolate the pump for repair.
A check valve and isolation valve shall be installed in the discharge
pipe of the jockey pump.
SENSING LINE FOR JOCKEY PUMP
Jockey pump shall have its own individual pressure sensing line (15 to
25 mm ) nominal size made between its discharge check & isolation
valve.
Jockey Pump Controllers
Color Touchscreen Display
The JOCKEY Touch - Jockey Pump Controllers are supplied with a
micro-processor based, color touchscreen.
The touchscreen display allows the user to monitor and program func-
tions and values.
Pressure input is provided by a 4-20mA pressure sensor.
Vertical turbine pump
What is vertical turbine fire pump?
In this type of pump the impellers are fully immersed in water,
maintaining priming at all times. The pumps are driven by
vertical electric motors or by diesel engines through a right-angle
gearbox.
Vertical Turbine Fire Pumps
• BENFITS
– Will operate under suction lift
– Available in electric or diesel drive
– Available over wide flow and head range
Vertical turbine pump
In this design, the pump is installed, submerged in water and its
motor is installed at ground or surface level. The
power for driving the pump is transmitted through a rigid shaft
running into the underground water tank or well. The
pump having impeller of either or semi axial flow type. Since these
impeller resemble to those of turbine, such pumps are generally
called vertical turbine pumps.
Turbine pumps has got three distinct
sections
Bowl assembly
Column assembly
Head assembly
Pump Bowl Assembly of Turbine Pumps
The core of the vertical turbine pump is the bowl assembly. The
casing of the impeller and diffuser
type is optimized for the efficient delivery of head and capability that
your device
needs. The pump can be initiated without the priming with the
submerged impellers. The discharge from bowl assembly is co-axial
with the shaft and contained by a vertical column pipe or discharge
pipe through which water is delivered.

Automatic Transfer Switch
Integration
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is a
device that automatically transfers a
power supply from its primary source
to a backup source when it senses a
failure or outage in the primary source.
Remote Alarm Panels
The remote alarm panel shall be equipped Monitoring provision . B. The panel shall
automatically detect input alarm from main panel
What is the NFPA Standard for
pump testing
According to NFPA 25, fire pumps must be tested on both a monthly
and annual basis to ensure that they will perform as designed. These
two different tests are referred to as a monthly “churn” test and
an annual flow test.
Churn test for fire pump
The fire pump churn test is done by running the fire
pump without the water flowing. The churn pressure is
measured. This is a measure of the pressure the pump
delivers when it is running without water flowing through it.
OPERATION
PRE-STARTING CHECKS:
Before starting the pump the following checks should be made:
Rotate the pump shaft by hand to make sure the pump is free and the impeller is correctly
positioned
Make sure the shaft-adjusting nut is property locked into position.
Be sure the driver has been properly lubricated in accordance with the instructions
furnished with the driver.
Check the driver rotation. Remember the pump must be disconnected from the driver
before checking. The driver must rotate COUNTER-CLOCKWISE when looking down at the top
of the driver.
Check all connections to the driver and control equipment.
Check that all piping connections are tight.
Check all anchor bolts for tightness.
Check all bolting and tubing connections for tightness (driver mounting bolts, flanged
coupling bolts, seal housing cover bolts, seal piping, etc.).
Make sure the mechanical seal is properly adjusted and locked into place.
INITIAL STARTUP:
1. If the discharge line has a valve in it, it should be partially open for initial starting.
2. Start lubrication liquid flow on enclosed lineshaft units.
3. Start the pump and observe the operation. If there is any excess noise or
vibration, or if the pump seems sluggish, or will not run, disconnect the pump
immediately and refer to Section 6 for probable cause.
4. If the pump starts satisfactorily, open the discharge valve as desired.
5. Check complete pump and driver for leaks, loose connections or improper
operation.
6. If possible, the pump should be left running for approximately 1/2 hour on the
initial startup. This will allow the bearings, packing or seals, and other parts to
"run-in" and reduce the possibility of trouble on future starts.
MAINTENANCE
PERIODIC INSPECTION:
A periodic (once a month) detailed inspection is suggested for all units. During this inspection.
The pump and driver should be checked for performance and change in noise or vibration
level, loose bolts or piping, dirt and corrosion. Clean and repaint all areas that are rusted or
corroded.
Flow need to check for pump & electrical parts
Function of ats operation
PUMP LUBRICATION:
Other than the packing box lubrication outlined in the Greasing The Packing Box Section
and lineshaft lubrication outlined in Lineshaft Lubrication Section, the pump will not require
further periodic lubrication. The suction bearing on the bowl assembly should be repacked
when repairs are made, however, no attempt should be made to repack until repairs to the bowl
assembly are necessary.
