What are Numbers ?
We have studied many types of numbers :
Positive and Negative ; Even and Odd ;
Natural and Whole ; Positive and Composite
numbers , but what are numbers ?
Numbers are building blocks of Mathematics.
It is an arithmetical value , expressed by a
symbol , or figure representing a particular
quantity and is used in counting and making
calculations.
We use decimal number system in our day-
to-to life to represent numbers. It uses 10
digits from 0 to 9.In this decimal system, the
successive positions to the left of the decimal

History of
Numbers
The first major advance in abstraction was the use of numerals to
represent numbers. This allowed systems to be developed for
recording large numbers. The ancient Egyptians developed a
powerful system of numerals with distinct hieroglyphs for 1, 10, and
all powers of 10 up to over 1 million.
A stone carving from Karnak, dating
back from around 1500 BCE and now
at the Louvre in Paris, depicts 276 as
2 hundreds, 7 tens, and 6 ones; and
similarly for the number 4,622. The
Babylonians had a place-value
system based essentially on the
numerals for 1 and 10, using base
sixty, so that the symbol for sixty
was the same as the symbol for one

Discovery of Zero Saraf
The concept of zero as a written digit in the decimal place value
notation was developed in India, presumably as early as during the
Gupta period. It is not to be confused with the letter O or the East
Asian symbol ⭕(known as Marujirushi ( 丸印 ) in Japan and Gongyo ( 공표 ( 공
標 ) in Korea), mark used to represent affirmation.
The word zero came into the English language via French zéro from
the Italian zero, a contraction of the Venetian zevro form of Italian
zefiro via ṣafira or ṣifr. In pre-Islamic time the word ṣifr (Arabic )صفر
had the meaning "empty". Sifr evolved to mean zero when it was used
to translate śūnya (Sanskrit: शून्य) from India. The first known
English use of zero was in 1598.
Ancient Egyptian numerals were of base 10. They used hieroglyphs for
the digits and were not positional. By 1770 BC, the Egyptians had a
symbol for zero in accounting texts. The symbol nfr (𓄤), meaning
beautiful, was also used to indicate the base level in drawings of

0 (zero) is a number, and the numerical digit
used to represent that number in numerals. It
fulfills a central role in mathematics as the
additive identity of the integers , real
numbers , and many other algebraic
structures. Zero is the smallest number non-
negative integer the immediately precedes 1. What's so special about the
It is an even number as it as it is divisible by number 0?
2 with the remainder itself 0 { 0 ≡ 0 (mod 2)}
Zero shows that there is no
i.e. no remainder . It cannot be termed as a
amount. It is also used as a
positive or a negative number. The correct
"placeholder" so we can write a
way of describing zero would be a number numeral properly. Example: 502
which equals to cardinality or an amount of (five hundred and two) could be
null size. mistaken for 52 (fifty two)
without the zero in the tens
1 is the natural number that follows 0 and place.
there is no natural number that precedes 0. 0

1. Mathsnumbers inthings
helps you construct our-Measuring

widths, and angles, estimating project costs, and
piecing it all together are a few instances that show
how vital Maths is for projects at home.
2. Baking and Cooking-Measuring
ingredients,Converting a recipe from Celsius to
Fahrenheit,Calculating cooking time per each item and
adjusting accordingly and Understanding ratios and
proportions, particularly in baking.
3.Maths allows you to travel safely-estimating the
amount of fuel, planning a trip based on miles per hour,
and distance travelled and it even helps when you go
abroad to change your currency to the country your
visiting. Ex: Foreign currency = British currency x

Applications Of Number Theory
in Computer Science
Number Theory is one of the most ancient
branches of mathematics with contributions
from Euclid and Archimedes, Egyptians,
Babylonians and the mathematicians of
India.
Number theory has important applications
in :
● Computer organization and Security
● Coding and Cryptography
● Random Number Generation
● Hash functions and Graphics
Conversely, number theorists use
computers in factoring large integers,
determining primes, testing conjectures,
and solving other problems.
