scientific terms, heat refers
specifically to the transfer of
thermal energy from one object
or system to another due to a
temperature difference.
DID YOU
KNOW!
Thermal energy, on the other
hand, is the total kinetic energy
of the particles within an object
or system.

Therefore, while ‘heat energy’ is
often used interchangeably with
thermal energy in casual
conversation, it’s more accurate to
use them the term thermal energy

HEAT
ENERGY
Heat is a form of
energy that flows
from a warmer
material to a colder
one.
PICTURE THIS!
Imagine you have a hot cup of
chocolate and a metal spoon.
When you put the spoon in the
chocolate, the spoon gets
warm.

Why?
PICTURE THIS!
Imagine you have a hot cup of
chocolate and a metal spoon.
When you put the spoon in the
chocolate, the spoon gets
warm.

Why? Because heat is moving

from hot chocolate to the
cooler spoon.
Now, think of thermal
energy as the “warmth”
stored inside the chocolate.
The hotter something is, the
more thermal energy it has.
But this energy doesn’t move
by itself- only when there’s a
temperature from the hotter
object to the cooler one.
So, thermal energy is the
warmth inside an object,
while heat is the movement of
that warmth from one object
to another.
PICTURE THIS!
Imagine a cup of hot
chocolate on a table. If you put
some ice cubes in the hot
chocolate drink, what do you
think will happen to the hot
chocolate? What will happen to
the ice cubes?
The chocolate drink is
hot while the ice cubes
are cold. When mixed, the
chocolate drink cools
down and the ice cubes
warm up and melt. Heat
flows from the hot
chocolate to the ice
cubes.
TEMPERATURE
If there is a difference in
temperatures between two
objects, heat flows.
Temperature is a
measurement of how hot
or cold something is.

Q
n
If you put a scoop of
ice cream into a warm
bowl, what will be the
direction of the flow of
heat?
Heat flows from an
object with a higher
temperature object to
one with a lower
temperature. Since the
bowl is warmer than
the ice cream, heat
flows from the bowl to
the ice cream.
EXPERIMENT
TIME
Precautions during the
experiment:
1. Do not touch the hot paper
clips or melted wax.
2. Keep flammable items
away from the candle.
3. Blow out the candle after
the experiment.
MATERIALS
• Candle
• Candle wax
• Match
• Paper clips
WHAT TO DO:

1.Place wax on each of the paper clips.

2. Heat the paper clips gently over the

candle. Be careful.
QUESTIONS
1.What happened when you heated the
paper clips and cup of glass over the
candle?
2. On which end did the wax melt?

3. Which is better conductor of heat metal

or glass? Why?
CONDUCTOR
S
Thermal conductors are
objects that allow heat to
flow easily through them.
Metals such as copper,
gold, and aluminum are
conductors.
