The Lab Rotation model

The Lab Rotation Model allows students to engage in online learning in a computer lab while also receiving face-to-face support from teachers, facilitating a flexible and personalized learning experience. This model is beneficial for tracking student performance and supporting those without access to technology at home. However, it requires careful scheduling and additional supervisory support to maintain the personalized aspect of instruction.

ROTATION MODEL
(B) THE LAB ROTATION MODEL

1. ROTATION MODEL
(B) THE LAB ROTATION MODEL
• Lab rotation is very similar to station rotation, except that with lab rotation, students fulfill the
online learning part of the instruction in a computer lab rather than in the classroom.
• Here a student may have a similar experience to station rotation except that they are likely to
navigate across a campus to different environment rather staying in one setting as they rotate.
• One benefit of this model is that using the lab frees up classroom space for other activities
within the rotation model.
• Adequate access to a computer lab is an important consideration for this model.
• One of the biggest considerations for implementing a lab rotation model is scheduling.
Whether you are piloting the model yourself, or your entire school is transitioning to a lab
rotation model, you will need to be on the same page with your colleagues about how and
when the lab can be used by your class.
IMPLEMENTING A LAB ROTATION MODEL

The Lab Rotation model can be set up the following way:

a.
Learners spend one part of their day in a computer lab working through the online
curriculum at their own pace. Another part of the day they work in a class with a teacher
to reinforce what they learned in the lab and can cover tricky questions.
• In a computer lab, learners can work flexibly at their own pace, spending as much
time as they need in order to understand the material.
• During face-to-face interaction, teachers provide support or enrichment activities
as needed.
• A teacher may also group the students, and all the groups may be working on
something different based on where they’re at and what mastery level they’ve shown.
IMPLEMENTING A LAB ROTATION MODEL

b.
Another method of implementing this model is as follows:
• A mini-lesson is delivered in the formal training room.
• Those who grasp the subject move onto the computer lab station for
independent practice at their own pace.
• Learners who need additional support are able to receive personalized attention
in a small group.
• This method allows the teacher to intervene quickly if learners need additional
support.
BENEFITS OF THE LAB ROTATION MODEL

• Requires little adjustment to the traditional learning set-up. Most organizations and schools
have access to computers or spaces where learners can use their own devices to access the e-
learning aspect of this model.
• E-learning is more engaging. Learners are more likely to stay engaged and have fun through
an interactive e-learning course. It also allows the students learn while doing.
• It makes tracking your learners’ performance incredibly easy. It also provides valuable data on
how they’ve interacted with the learning content.
• Supports students who cannot access online learning at home. Unlike the flipped classroom
model, where students do the majority of their learning as homework, the Lab Rotation model
supports students who do not have access to technology or do not have the motivation or
environment to self-study at home.
LIMITATIONS OF THE LAB ROTATION
MODEL
• At first, you may experience some difficulties while setting up a new
learning model. Teachers or trainers will have to change their teaching
methods significantly, like reorganizing activities and curriculum. But
after you do it once, you can further reuse the same planning.
• When moving learners to the computer lab station, in a school setting
particularly, you will need additional supervisory support from a
teaching assistant. Otherwise, if the primary trainer is required to
supervise instead of providing additional support, you will lose the
personalized aspect of this model.

(B) THE LAB ROTATION MODEL
• Lab rotation model is one of the most common models adopted by schools
across Brazil, Malaysia, and South Africa.
The case of Guru Nanak National High School:
• At this private school in Mumbai, Lab Rotation allows half the class (a hefty 30
students) to spend time on technology while the other half receives
individualized support from the teacher.
• The lead teacher instructs students in the classroom while a teaching assistant
facilitates learning in the computer lab.
• The groups rotate between these two “stations” on alternating days.

(B) THE LAB ROTATION MODEL
• Guru Nanak adopted the Lab Rotation model as a feasible means of
differentiating instruction in such a large class.
• The school reports that now all learners can make progress in the
curriculum on any given day.

Now, the question is, do computer labs symbolize the “future of
learning”?
Probably not, particularly as mobile penetration grows rapidly. But with
pedagogical savvy, educators continue to take advantage of them to
help create better learning experiences for students in the present.
