1. Define the term; teaching, learning and
health education.
Teaching
Teaching is the process of attending to people’s
needs, experience and feelings, and making specific
interventions to help them learn particular things.
Learning
Learning can be defined as the change in behavior
that occurs at any time or any place as a result of
exposure to environmental stimuli.
Health Education
Health education is a process that informs, motivate
and helps people to adopt and maintain healthy
practices and lifestyles, advocates environmental
changes as needed to facilitate this goal and conducts
professional training and research to the same end.
Health Education Definition by WHO
Any combination of learning experiences designed to
help individuals and communities improve their health,
by increasing their knowledge or influencing their
attitudes.
2. Purpose and goals of health education.
Goals of health education
The ultimate goal of health education is to promote,
maintain and improve individuals' and community health.
Health education is aimed at reducing morbidity and
mortality due to preventable health problems.
Purpose of health education
o Teach the clients to build up a correct awareness on
health.
o Change the client, ill (Unhealthy) lifestyle.
o Reduce or eliminate health risk factors.
o Prevent illness, promote health and enhance the health
level of whole community.
3. Principles of teaching and learning.
Encourage the contact between faculty and students.
Develop reciprocity and cooperation among students.
Encourage active learning.
Give prompt feedback.
Emphasize task on time.
Respect diverse talent and ways of learning.
4. Principles of health education.
Interest (the topic of interest, identify the felt needs of people)
Participation (encourage the people to participate)
Comprehension (determine the level of understanding of people)
Motivation (to fundamental desire of learning)
Reinforcement (also called booster dose, repletion of teaching)
Known to unknown (start from which people know and move to
unknown)

There are three strategies to deliver health
education:
