The Framework for 21st Century Learning is a


framework that outlines the skills and knowledge
students need to succeed in the 21st century. The
Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21)
created the framework with input from teachers,
business leaders, and education experts.
The Framework for 21st Century
The framework includes:

Content knowledge
Students need to know the facts and information that are relevant to their field

Specific skills
Students need to develop skills like critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and
collaboration

Expertise
Students need to develop expertise in areas that are relevant to their field

Literacies
Students need to develop literacies like information literacy, media literacy, and technology literacy
The framework also emphasizes the importance of social-emotional development.

How is the framework used?

The framework is used in early learning experiences to help young children


develop the skills they need

The framework is used in 21st-century classrooms to expose students to new


ideas and opposing viewpoints

The framework is used in 21st-century skills assessments to evaluate students'


performance in complex tasks

Learning and innovation skills in the 21st century are the skills that help people adapt to complex
work and life environments. These skills are also known as the "4 C's" of 21st century learning:

• Critical thinking: Using reasoning strategies to solve problems and make decisions

• Creativity: Thinking of new ways to do things, and using that to innovate and invent

• Collaboration: Working with others to achieve a goal

• Communication: Sharing ideas, questions, and solutions with others

These skills are important for students to develop so they can become lifelong learners and
flexible leaders.

Real-world projects: Students can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world projects to
