Psad 1

The document outlines a series of engineering problems related to forces, tensions, and stresses in various mechanical systems, including beams, cables, and hydraulic mechanisms. It includes calculations for forces at specific points, stress analysis, and equilibrium conditions for different structures. The problems require knowledge of mechanics and material properties to determine forces, angles, and dimensions necessary for structural integrity.

PSAD - 1

CE Review
Week 3
1. Knowing that the tension in cable BC is 725N, determine the
resultant of the three forces exerted at point B of beam AB.
2. A bin holds three cylinders, each weighing 1200 N. The diameter of
each cylinder is 600 mm. Assume frictionless surface.

b.Determine the force at point D
c. Determine the force at point G
3. The hook is subjected to three forces P, Q, and S. If P=35kN
and Q=45 kN

a. Determine the angle such that the

resultant of the three forces is 80kN
acting horizontally to the right.
b. If angle find the magnitude S, in kN,
such that the resultant force is horizontal
to the right
c. Find the magnitude of the forces S such
that the three forces are in equilibrium.
4. Rigid bar ABD is supported by a pin at
bracket A and by a tie rod (1). Tie rod (1)
has a diameter of 5mm, and it is supported
by double-shear pin connection at B and
D. The pin at bracket A is a single-shear
connection. All pins are 7mm in diameter.
Assume a=600mm, b=300mm, h=450mm,
p=900N, and θ=55°. Determine the
following:
a. Force and normal stress in rod (1)
b. Reaction at A
c. Shear stress at A and B
5. A load P is supported by a cable AB
and a spring AC, when p=240 N, the
angle . Consider k=500 N/m for the
spring:
a. If cable AB is 0.60m long, determine
the force in cable AB,
b. Determine the force in spring AC.
c. Find the unstretched length of spring
in mm
6. The square plate has a mass of
1800kg. If the plate is to be lifted
while remaining horizon. Determine
the force AD, BD, and CD.
7. The bell-crank mechanism is in
equilibrium for the forces acting in rods
(1) and (2). The bell crank is supported
by a 10-mm diameter pin at B that acts in
single shear. Assume a=65mm,
b=150mm, F1=1,100N, and . Determine
the ff:

A.Force at rod (2)

B.Resultant force at B
C.Shear stress in pin B
D.Minimum thickness of bell crank if the
allowable bearing stress is 18MPa.
8. A hydraulic punch press is used to punch a slot in a 0.50-in. thick plate. If the
plate shears at a stress of 30 ksi, determine the minimum force P required to
punch the slot.
9. Rigid beam ABC is supported as shown in
Figure P4.10. The pin connections at B, C, and D
are each double shear connections, and the
ultimate shear strength of the pin material is 620
MPa. Tie rod (1) has a yield strength of 340 MPa.
A uniformly distributed load of w = 15 kN/m is
applied to the beam as shown. A factor of safety of
3.0 is required for all components.
