introduction
Coordinate geometry is that branch of
mathematics which deals with study of
geometry by means of algebra . Rene
Descartes , a French mathematician ,
realized around 1637 that a line or a curve
in a plane can be represented by an
algebraic equation . As a result , a new
1
branch of mathematics called coordinate
geometry came into existence .
Terms to remember
Ordered pair – An ordered pair is written by its two member in specific order .

abscissa - (in a system of coordinates) the distance from a point to the vertical
or y -axis, measured parallel to the horizontal or x -axis; the x -coordinate.

Ordinate - ordinate is a value of a coordinate on the vertical axis. A coordinate

on a plane that is vertical and measured in relation to the x axis is an example
of an ordinate.

Plotting of point – when we identify a point in a coordinate plane with a given

ordered pair of real number , we say that we plot the point . 2
Finding coordinate whose

i. Abscissa is 3 and ordinate -4.

ii. Whose ordinate is 5 and abscissa is -2.

SOL 1 coordinate of p = (3,-4)

SOL 2 coordinate of p = (-2,5)

3
Finding the quadrant on which the following points lie

i. (-3,5)
ii. (2,0)
iii. (-3,-6)

Sol 1 – (-3,5) lies on second quadrant

Sol 2 – (2,0) lies on x axis

Sol 3 – (-3,-6) lies on third quadrant

4
Finding the axis on which the following points lie

i. (0,2)
ii. (23,0)
iii.(0,-4)

Sol 1 – (0,2) lies on y axis

Sol 2 – (23,0) lies on x axis

Sol 2 – (0,-4) lies on y axis

5
Plotting of point on the same graph

a) (3,4)
b) (1,-2)
c) (-2,-3) A (3,4)

B (1,-2)
C (-2,-
3)

6
Checking that the following points are collinear or not

(1,3),(-1,-1),(-2,-3)

7
Drawing graph of linear equation

i. y= -2x + 1.
x 0 1 -1
Sol 1 -
y 1 -1 3

Point a = (0,1)
Point b = (1,-1)
Point c = (-1,3)
. (0,1)
