Female pelvis
Female pelvis is slightly different from the male
pelvis. Female pelvis is larger and broader then
male pelvis. The women pelvis is adapted for
child bearing and is a wider and flatter shape
then the male pelvis. The female pelvic area
contains a number of organs and structures. It’s
located between the abdomen and legs. This
area provides support for the intestines and
also contains the bladder and reproductive
organs.
Function of female pelvis
• The primary function of the pelvic girdle is to ,
acting as a allow movement of the body ,
especially walking and running .
• It permits the person to sit and kneel.
• The woman’s pelvis is adapted for
childbearing ,and because of its increased width
and rounded brim women are less speedy. The
pelvis transmits the weigh of the trunk to the
legs, acting as a bridge between the femurs.
Pelvis bones
• The pelvis consists of 4 bones:
• The sacrum and coccyx from the back of the
pelvis and two hip bones (innominate bones)
from the sides and front of the pelvis.
• The sacrum consist of 5 sacral vertebrae .
• The hip bones consist of:
• a. the ilium, the large flared out part.
• b. the ischium ,the lowest part .
• C.2 pubic bones .
Pelvic joints
• The joints of the pelvis include:
• Two sacroiliac joints
• Sacra-coccygeal joint
• The pubic symphysis joint.
• Make up the 4 joints of the pelvis
Parts of female pelvis
• The female pelvis is divided in to two parts
• 1. True Pelvis: the portion that lies below
the pelvic brim. The true pelvis is made up
of three parts:
• The inlet,
• The pelvic cavity ,
• The outlet.
• False pelvis: is situated above the pelvic brim .
And protects the abdominal organs
• Types of pelvis
1.Gynaecoid: true female pelvis has a round brim ,ideal
for delivery.
2.Android: similar male pelvis , it brim is heart shaped.
3.Anthropoid : the brim is oval shape with the anterior-
posterior diameter longer then the transvers.
4. flat: this has kidney shaped brim with the transverse
diameter longer then the anterior-posterior.
