Storage Devices

The document provides an overview of storage devices, defining them as hardware components that read and write information. It classifies storage devices into categories such as hard disks, flash drives, optical disks, and magnetic tapes, detailing the characteristics and performance factors of hard disks. Additionally, it discusses external hard disks, their connectivity, storage capacity, and use for data backup and transfer.

Introduction:

What is Storage Device?

 A storage device is a computer hardware component that writes

and reads information or instructions to or from storage media.

 A computer performs to functions on storage devices writing

and reading.

 In Writing process it records information from memory to

storage medium.

 In Reading process it transfer information from storage medium

into computer memory.

Classification of storage devices

Flash DRIVE

Optical Disk Hard Disk

Floppy Disk Magnetic Tape

Hard Disk
 Hard disk is magnetic storage medium for a computer.

 Hard disk is used to store the large size of application programs

or files.

 It provide larger storage capacities and much faster access times Fig no 2

than floppy disks.

 It is also called Hard drive.

 Large computers contain multiple hard drive.

Characteristics of Hard disk:

 Like a floppy disk, a hard disk is a type of magnetic media that
stores items using magnetic patterns. Fig no 3

 Also as read / write storage media.

Structure of Hard Drive:

Magnetic Platter

Spindle

Read/write Head

Actuator

Power Connector

IDE Connector

Jumper Block Fig no 4

Working of Hard Disk:
 The hard drive contains a spinning platter with a thin magnetic

coating.

 A "head" moves over the platter, writing 0's and 1's as tiny

areas of magnetic North or South on the platter.

 To read the data back, the head goes to the same spot, notices

the North and South spots flying by, and so deduces the stored

0's and 1’s.

Hard Disk Performance:

The performance of hard disk depend upon:

 Seek time: It is the time required to move head to a particular cylinder or track.

 Rotational Latency: It is the time required to reach the head at the beginning of an

appropriate sector.

 Transfer Time: It is the time to required to write data on the disk from the main

memory.

 Access Time: Access time is the sum of average seek time, rotational delay, and

transfer time. Mathematically:

External Hard Disk:

 It is a separate magnetic storage.

 It is not fixed in the system unit.

 It is connected to the computer through a USB port or FireWire

port or wirelessly.

 It is also consists of multiple platters that are air-sealed inside a

casing. Fig no 6

 It storage capacity is very high up to 4TB or more.

 It is used for backup or transferring of data to other PC.

 It data transfer rate is slower.
