Infrared Technology

The presentation covers infrared technology, a wireless communication method used for short-range device interactions, such as remote controls for TVs and cameras. It highlights the advantages of infrared technology, including its speed, low cost, and safety, as well as its limitations, such as the need for line of sight and short transmission distances. Overall, infrared technology is presented as a popular choice for various applications despite its drawbacks.

Introduction
In our presentation, we are going to talk about
infrared technology, examples of infrared
technology, disadvantages and advantages of
Infrared technology and finally why you should use
Infrared Technology.
Firstly…what is Infrared Technology?

2
What is Infrared Technology??
Infrared (IR) is a type of wireless mobile technology
used for device communication over short ranges. It is a
type of electromagnetic radiation (a wave with electricity)
.
The word infrared means below red. It comes from the
Latin word infra (meaning below) and the English word
red. Infrared waves cannot be seen by the eye. The
infrared wave is between 800 nm(nanometers) and 1
mm. People sense infrared as heat.

Examples of Infrared
Technology
Infrared transmission systems are widely used for
short-range communications. A common application
for infrared is in remote control systems for
television, VCRs, DVD players and set-top boxes of
various descriptions. Infrared transmitters are usually
relatively directional, cheap, light-weight, reliable and
easy to manufacture.

4
Possible Uses of Infrared
Technology

One of the most common uses of

infrared radiation is in heat
sensitive thermal imaging
cameras these can be used to
study human and animal body
heat patterns but more often they
are used as night vision cameras
these have uses in warfare,as
security cameras and in animal 5

Why would we use Infrared
- Infrared Technology Technology???
is much faster and more reliable than its
counterparts. The devices used for the implementation of
Infrared wireless technology are cheaper. They consume much
less power and are much more compact. It covers a much
"wider range" of area seamlessly.

- The main advantage of Infrared Technology is it’s simple and

extremely cheap senders and receivers which are integrated
into nearly all mobile devices available today. Infrared
transmission requires minimum power to operate and can be
set up at a low cost.

- It provides a secure way to transfer data between devices as 7

Advantages of Infrared
Technology

Another reason to try Infrared Technology is because its communication

has high directionality and can identify the source as different sources
emit radiation of different frequencies and thus the risk of information
being diffused is eliminated.

It offers safety! Infrared radiation is not harmful to human beings. Hence

infrared communication can be used in any space without being harmful t
anyone.

8
Disadvantages of Infrared
technology

Although infrared technology is a good choice

these are some disadvantages to help you decide
if it’s worth it or not.
● The sender has to be in the line of sight of the
receiver to send the message successfully
● The transmission distance is short so you have
to be close to the receiver
● During transmission the two devices cannot be
in motion or the message won’t be sent 9
Summary
In our presentation today, we discussed what Infrared
Technology is and different components relating to it.
We learnt that Infrared Technology is a wireless mobile
technology used for device communication over short
ranges. It can be used for televisions, DVD or VCRs,
just to name a few. Infrared Technology has many pros
in which makes it very popular such as it having high
speed but it also has cons such as the fact that you
have to be close to the receiver when using it.
