Comparing short and long sounds
Rules: Short vowel sounds
• If a word or syllable has only one vowel and it comes at the beginning
of a word, the vowel is usually short (VC)
on, up, in, at, ox
• If a word or syllable has only one vowel and it comes between two
consonants, the vowel is usually short ( CVC)
Short a: fast, bat, cap, rack
Short e: jet, web, bet, tent, belt
Short i : sit, lips, sink,
Short o : hot, rock, pop, lock, box
Short u : run, tub, bus, lunch, duck
Rule: Long vowel sounds
• Vowel + consonant + e : The first vowel is usually long and final “ e” is
silent: name, dime, theme, home, pale
• Two vowels together, the first vowel is usually and the second vowel
is usually silent: heat, meat, train, pie, boat, suit
