Introduction to Data Analytics and
Analytical Thinking
Data analytics is the process of using data to gain insight in other to
make data driven decision.
This profession is defined as the process of collecting information,
processing that information and drawing relevant conclusion to make
(informed) data-driven decisions.
With the analysis made from the information gotten, a business can
measure 3 basic things; What factors increases our revenue or profit?
What factors incurred much cost to us and how do we reduce it? And
what ways can we improve or optimize a particular process?
Analytical thinking is when an analyst identifies and defines a problem
then solves it using data in a step by step manner.
Process of data analytics
ASK: Here, insights are derived from stake holders using questions
before collection takes place.
PREPARE: Here, analysts builds timeline, collect data and stores data.
PROCESS: Here, analysts cleans and checks the information they’ve
collected
ANALYZE: The analyst finds patterns, relationship and trends from the
data they collected and processed.
SHARE: They share it to the stakeholders who are the audience
ACT: They act on the data and use the analysis results.
Life cycle of data
Plan: Analyst decides what kind of data is needed, how it will be
managed, and who will be responsible for it.
Capture: Collect or bring in data from a variety of different sources.
Manage: Care for and maintain the data. This includes determining
how and where it is stored and the tools used to do so.
Analyze: Use the data to solve problems, make decision, and support
business goals.
Archive: The analyst keeps relevant data stored for long-term and
future reference.
Destroy: Remove data from storage and delete any shared copies of
the data.
Why data & its skills
Data analytics techniques enable a business to take raw data and uncover patterns
to extract valuable insights. As a result, data analysis helps companies make
informed decisions, create a more effective marketing strategy, improve customer
experience, streamline operations, among many other things.
Businesses require personnel who can handle, organize, and assess digital content
as they store and evaluate more information online or in databases. Nowadays,
many data analytics approaches rely on specialized systems and software that
combine machine learning algorithms, automation, and other features.
Data analysts benefit from developing specific skills. The following are some of the
essential skills needed for a data analyst to master in order to be successful in this
field:
Excel
Programming languages (SQL, R)
Data visualization (Power BI and/or Tableau)
Machine learning (ML)
Data warehousing
Research
Business intelligence tools
Set up your analytics tool box
Spreadsheets – Google sheets and Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Excel data toolbox setup:
Go to File > Options > Scroll down to click on Add-in on the left hand
side of the dialogue box > On the right hand side, choose that ‘manage’
box and the default Excel-Addins > Click on ‘Go’ > on the next dialogue
box that pops up, tick all the boxes of tools > Click ‘Ok’. Excel loads up
the Data analysis tool box and on the ‘Data Menu’ on the Excel
workbook, your toolbox is set.
Power BI – The most efficient data visualization software powered by
Business Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence.
MySQL, PostgreSQL and BIgQuery – The three most used
Structured Query Language Database management system (RDMS).
Used to store and query millions of data.
Become fair and impartial
Data integrity, quality and fair judgement
Data integrity means that data is valid, complete, authentic, and
consistent, and it should not be changed between source and
destination. Data quality means that your data is full of practical and
valuable information for your business task.
IMPORTANCE OF BOTH OF THEM IN YOUR ANALYSIS
Saves you the time, effort, and money it would cost to make a big
decision based on incorrect or incomplete data.
Protects your data subjects’ information and image.
Higher chance of making more impactful and beneficial decisions.
It ensures the transparency and trustworthiness of data.
SPREADSHEET FUNCTIONS AND FOMULARS
The formulas and functions in excel is essential for any analysis you
want to perform. The formulas can be found on the formulas bar on
Excel menu. Each formula and function has its peculiar purpose and
understanding when to use them is important.
Functions are predefined formulas that perform calculations by using
specific values, called arguments, in a particular order, or structure.
Functions can be used to perform simple or complex calculations.
A formula is an expression that operates on values in a range of cells.
Excel formulas enable you to perform calculations such as addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division.
Some of the important formulas an analyst must use while working on
Excel or any data analysis software are;
SUM | AVERAGE | MAX | MIN | COUNT | COUNTIF | IF | SUMIF | SUMIFS |
VLOOKUP | INDEX – MATCH |Additionally, Data validation.
This formulas are so important that it makes your work easier and faster.
As you work within hundreds and thousands of rows and columns, you
don’t want to loose your efficiency in working with data.
DASHBOARD BASICS
Microsoft Excel and Pivot tables
As an analyst you will be working with pivot tables more often. Pivot tables
summarizes your report to see comparison, trends and patterns in your data.
Pivots makes it easy for an analyst to get the exact insight he requires to
serve the business task an easily make dashboards.
CHARTS/GRAPHS
A picture is worth a thousand words. Properly designed and presented, a
graph can be worth a thousand words of description. Concepts difficult to
describe through a recitation of numbers can be easily displayed in a chart
or plot. Charts can quickly show general trends, unusual observations, and
important relationships between variables.
Excel includes variations of each of these chart types. For example, the
column charts can display values across categories or the percentage that
each value contributes to the whole across categories. Many of the charts
can be displayed in 3D as well. ____Reference the working with Chart/Graph
