Society
• Science, Technology, and Society (STS) is an
interdisciplinary course that deals with
interactions between science and technology
and society (social, cultural, political, and
economic contexts) that shape and are shaped
by them. (CMO No. 20, series of 2013).
• It is an interdisciplinary field that explores the
complex ways in which science and technology
shape our society, and how society shapes
scientific and technological development
What is “SCIENCE”?

• Science– originated from the
Latin word, “scientia” which
means knowledge
• Science is a body of knowledge
deals with the process of learning
about the natural and physical
world.
• Describes the systematic and
methodical activity of building
and organizing knowledge about
how the universe behaves
through observation,
experimentation and gathering
• Science is the most
structured way of Scientific Method
understanding the
natural world

• A system of acquiring
knowledge based on the
“Scientific Method
TECHNOLOGY
• Originated from the Greek word “techne”
which means art, skill, or cunning of hand

• the application of scientific knowledge,


laws, and principles to produce services,
materials, tools, and machines aimed at
solving real-world problems.

• Involves tools, techniques and procedures


for putting the findings of science to
practical use
• Examples: Gadgets, machines, electronics,
cars, pencil sharpener, calculators,
appliances etc…
Society
• is a large group of people who live together in an
organized way, making decisions about how to do
things and sharing the work that needs to be done
• Refers to group of individuals who share a common
culture, values and norms, and who interact with
one another within a specific geographic or social
community
Society is composed of
• People
• Government
• Territory (Geographical area under the jurisdiction of
government)
• Culture (Traditions, values, beliefs, way of life, etc.)
Interconnection between Technology and Science

Science is the knowledge gained from scientific


method while Technology is the use of science
knowledge to make things

Science and technology help each other


advance. Scientific knowledge is used to
create new technologies. New technologies
often allow scientists to explore nature in
different ways and make new discoveries
