The visual of arts
Visual art - includes all the line arts as well as new media and contemporary forms of
expression such as assemblage, collage, conceptual, installation, as well as photography
and film based forms like video art and animation or any combination thereof.

ELEMENTS: line, shape, tone, color, pattern,

textures and form

They are the building blocks of composition in art. When we analyzed any drawing painting
sculpture or design examine this component parts to see how they combine to create the
overall effect of the artwork.
Line as an element of art

Line is the foundation of all drawings.

its is the first and the most versatile of the visual elements of art. Line in an artwork can be
used in many different ways.
It can be used to suggest shape, pattern, form, structure, growth, depth , distance, rhythm ,
movement and a range of emotions

According to Paul Klee, “A line is a dot that went for a walk” in discussions of art elements , a
line usually described as an extension of a dot.

Different lines
1.Straight lines
they are more technically described as rectilinear lines

2.Horizontal lines
some straight lines may move from left to right or vice versa they are called horizontal
lines

3.Vertical lines
they start from the bottom going up or vice versa vertical line shows strength balance
and stability

4.Diagonal lines.
They have both positive and negative implications on the positive implication diagonals
indicate movement or actions as may be seen in the posture of a runner or a horse in a
full run on the adverse side diagonals may indicate stress frustration or depth as may be
seen from the posture of athlete's when victory is lost or the posture of a soldier when
defeated in the battle

5.Zigzag lines
the result when two straight lines meet to form an angle

6.Curve lines
they are more technically curvilinear they are organic and natural a curve line is the kind
of line that is seen in the natural world of living organism
We have a psychological response to different
types of lines

1.Curved lines suggest comfort and ease

2.Horizontal lines suggest distance and calm
3.Vertical lines suggest height and strength
4.Jagged lines suggest turmoil and anxiety

The way we draw a line can convey different

expressive qualities
1.Freehand lines can express the personal energy and mood of the
artist
2.Mechanical lines can express a rigid control
3.Continuous lines can lead the eye in the certain directions
4.Broken lines can expressed the ephemeral or the insubstantial
5.Thick lines can express strength
6.Thin lines can express delicacy

6
The element of shape
Shapes can be natural or man-made regular or irregular flat two-
dimensional or solid 3-dimensional.
Representational or abstract geometric or organic transparent or opaque
positive or negative decorative or symbolic colored pattern or textured.

The perspective of shapes

The angles and curves of shapes appear to change depending on our viewpoint
the technique we used to describe this change is called perspective drawing

The behavior of shapes

Shape- can be used to control your feelings in the composition of an artwork
Squares- and rectangles can portrayed strength and stability
Circles and ellipses- can represent continuous movement
Triangles- can lead in an upward movement
Inverted triangles- can create a sense of imbalance and tension

KINDS OF SHAPES

Geometric shapes
Regular and precise and presents an industrial feel to the viewer. This
shapes maybe rectilinear or curvilinear.

Organic shapes
Are said to have a natural appearance and are usually curvilinear and
irregular

Biomorphic and amorphous

Biomorphic shapes manifest some qualities of biological organisms
whereas amorphous shapes exist without basis from either nature or
geometry.

Two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes

Two dimensional shapes are plot a circle square triangle has two
dimensions
Three-dimensional shapes on a flat surface however give the illusion
of mass and solidity a sphere cube and pyramid gives the viewer
three-dimensional shapes on a picture plane.

THE ELEMENT OF TONE

Tone is the lightness or darkness of a color the tonal values of an artwork

can be adjusted to alter it's expressive character

Tone can be used

-To create a contrast of light and dark
-To create the illusion of form
-To create a dramatic or tranquil atmosphere
-To create a sense of depth and distance
-To create a rhythm or pattern within a composition

THE ELEMENT OF COLOR
Color is the visual element that has the strongest effect on our emotions we use
color to create the mood or atmosphere of an artwork
In art colors play a vital role an interesting piece of composition is usually organized
based on the artists understanding of how colors impact of aesthetic and emotional
aspect of the viewer

There are many different approaches to the use of color

Color as light
Color as tone
Color as pattern
Color as symbol
Color as movement
Color as harmony
Color as contrast
Color as mood 10

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF COLOR

1 Hue.
This pertains to the name for which the color is known the hue is
determined by wavelength of light physically given by the color
2 value.
Stick refers to the lightness or darkness of a color the value of
color pertains to the absence of white or black.
3 intensity or saturation
This characteristic refers to how pure the color is. Pure hues
pertain the absence of white black or gray.

Additive and subtractive colors

Two-color systems exist depending on the source.
Colors of light like what was discovered by sir Isaac Newton and
colors pigment have different characteristics they are either
additive or subtracting

The color wheel

Sir isaac newton was the first to conceptualize the color wheel to
discover relationship between and among colors.
Wheel can be described as a circle divided equally into 12 parts
representing the 12 colors and how they relate to each other.
TYPES OF COLORS
1 primary colors
The color wheel is primarily based on pigments making the mixture subtractive.
In the color wheel can be seen the three primary colors
Which are red , yellow and blue.

2 secondary colors
This color results from the combination of two primary colors in equal amounts.
Thus the secondary colors are orange which result from a combination of red + yellow.

3. Intermediate color
This colors can result from a combination of a primary and a secondary color.

4 tertiary colors
In most books intermediate colors and tertiary are considered one and the some.

5 neutrals
When we look at pigments we realize that not all of them show colors black white or gray do not
share the same characteristics of any color in the spectrum.
THE ELEMENT OF PATTERN
Patterns is made by repeating or echoing the elements of an artwork to
communicate a sense of balance harmony contrast rhythm or movement

Natural pattern patterns in art is often based on the inspiration we

get from observing the natural patterns that occurs in nature.

Man-made pattern patterns in art is used for both structural and

decorative purposes
ELEMENT OF TEXTURE
Textures is the surface quality of an artwork the redness or smoothness
of the material from which is made we experience texture in two ways

Optical texture -an artist may used his/her skillful painting technique
to create the illusion of texture
Physical texture- an artist may point with expressive brush stroke
whose texture conveys the physical and emotional energy of boat the
artist and his or her subject
Ephemeral texture- this is a third category of textures whose fleeting
forms as subject to change like clouds smoke flames bubbles and
liquids
THE ELEMENT OF FORMS
form is the physical volume of a shape and the space that it occupies.

Three dimensional form- can be molded carb and constructed it

can be created from sculpture materials like clay, wax, plaster, wood,
stone, concrete, cast and constructed metal, plastic, resins, glass and
mixed media

Two dimensional form- constructs the illusion of 3d in 2D media
