Introduction:
The safety of personal belongings has become a problem especially in today’s environment, particularly in

terms of academic setting, there are certain areas that are prone to loss, theft, and illegal access of such

personal belongings. Since the security can not really do much because some certain situations are

unavoidable, inevitable and uncontrollable. However, nowadays a traditional locker system that uses physical

keys to unlock a mechanical system, can easily get lost and be vulnerable to unauthorized access. That is why

in today’s modern technologies, adding a biometric system that includes fingerprint and a backup number pin

code lock to avoid such technical difficulties in a fingerprint sensor would significantly enhance the security of a

locker system.
Introduction:
According to the study of Cortez et al. (2016), “Developmental research method which was

comprised of hardware development and software development were utilized in the study. The

system was able to scan the finger, match with the saved pattern and unlock the locker. Global

system for mobile (GSM) module was able to send text message containing the auto-generated

passcode of the locker when an unrecognized fingerprint was encountered. As a result, all the

hardware components functioned normally and efficiently. The program uploaded to the system run

consistently as the device performed its functions.”

Introduction:
According to Bong (2021), “The importance of biometrics in modern society has been

strengthened by the necessity for large-scale identity management systems, the operation of which

is dependent on the precise assessment of an individual's identity in the context of many

applications. The technology recognizes authorized person's unique fingerprints and allows them

access. To utilize the fingerprint scanner, the user must place their finger on it. The event will

capture new human minutiae through fingerprint scanning. These new minutiae will be compared to

those in the database to determine if the individual is authorized or non-authorized”

Introduction:
Therefore, the need for extensive identity management systems, the functioning of which

depends on the accurate evaluation of an individual's identification in the context of several

applications. The technology identifies the distinct fingerprints of authorized personnel and grants

them access. The user must touch the fingerprint scanner with their finger in order to use it. The

event will use fingerprint scanning to record new human minutiae. To ascertain whether the person

is permitted or not, these new details will be compared to those in the database.
Introduction:
Mubarak (2023), has stated that The evolution of fingerprint security systems has revealed that

the majority of projects have only allowed one user and only offered one layer of authentication,

which has made them less secure as spoofing attacks on fingerprint authentication systems are

becoming more likely. The prototype used a two-step authentication process. Key components

used in the system include the Arduino Uno, fingerprint sensor, keypad, and electric lock. The

microcontroller unit processes the fingerprint data that the fingerprint sensor collects and saves for

use in authentication. After verification is successful, the unlocking step requires a password.
Introduction:

Chapter 2: REVIEW OF
RELATED LITERATURE,
STUDIES, AND SYSTEMS
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, STUDIES, AND SYSTEMS:

The chapter explores the project developers' understanding

of previous prototypes and relevant scholarly works through a

comprehensive review of local and foreign literature.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, STUDIES, AND SYSTEMS:

A study by Garg et al. (2019) reveals that modern people prefer security features in Smart

Biometric Lock (SBL) over other features, with Nepalese and Pakistanis being the most preferred

countries. This highlights the need for safer and more convenient technology to simplify lives in

today's fast-paced world.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, STUDIES, AND SYSTEMS:

Robberies still occur due to the easy breakability of mechanical locks, which affect locker

systems and other room aspects like door locks. Researchers conducted a study analyzing the

reliability, efficiency, and features of smart door locks using a survey questionnaire. Results showed

that smart door locks are effective tools for safe security, with face recognition and fingerprint

scanners playing a crucial role. Users trust the components used in the lock, and the system is

secure and requires less maintenance. The prototype was built using Arduino IDE and Fritzing

tools.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, STUDIES, AND SYSTEMS:

Researchers Zulfiqar and Younis (2024) have developed a smart locker system to reduce theft

risks in the security of priceless belongings and important records. The system uses a fingerprint

sensor and micro-camera to detect illegal tampering, sends photos to administrators, and uses an

advanced fingerprint sensor to verify registered users. The Internet of Things layer generates a

four-digit OTP, which users provide via email. This synergistic integration of security layers offers

strong protection and intelligence, addressing issues like theft and loss of keys or RFID cards.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, STUDIES, AND SYSTEMS:

Traditional lockers have vulnerabilities like key management issues and weak security. A study from the

Lyceum of the Philippines in Cavite confirmed the durability, data consistency, and operation of a fingerprint-

based locker system. The system provides a reliable and safe storage option, using contemporary technology

and upgrading security protocols. The study supports continuous efforts to improve locker systems and

suggests future expansion, user input, and biometric authentication techniques. The fingerprint-based locker

system is a significant development in the industry, offering promising applications for safe storage options.

(Baricante et al., 2023).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, STUDIES, AND SYSTEMS:

Modern biometrics uses biological characteristics to identify people, providing increased protection

through a "proof of property" that closely relates to the claimant's inherent behavioral or physical traits. This

unique and non-repudiation character makes biometrics difficult to replicate or share. However, there are

hidden dangers in the design and implementation of biometric systems, such as biometric identity theft and

privacy invasion. Compromises are hard to recover or replace, making biometric templates unusable.

Preventive measures include avoiding databases that save biometrics or storing them as much as possible.

(Ling Ngo et al., 2015)

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, STUDIES, AND SYSTEMS:

Traditional locking methods like RFID cards, passwords, and keys have been found to be less efficient. As

society develops, the need for improved security measures has increased. A study involving an Arduino Uno,

fingerprint sensor, keypad, and electric lock prototype demonstrated the effectiveness of two-step

authentication. The fingerprint sensor collects and stores user data, while the microcontroller unit processes the

authentication. After successful verification, a password is required for unlocking. The system's low cost makes

it suitable for various settings, including offices and high-security locations. (Mubarak 2023)
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, STUDIES, AND SYSTEMS:

The researcher Mubarak (2023) argues that fingerprint security systems, which are

currently limited to a single user and provide a single layer of authentication, are less

secure due to the increasing risk of spoofing attacks. He suggests that biometric

fingerprint systems alone are insufficient and require additional security layers to

enhance their security and convenience in modern times.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, STUDIES, AND SYSTEMS:

Researchers have developed a new security system for biometric fingerprint systems, which

includes pin codes. The system uses user mode to gather new data and compare it with stored

information. If the information matches, the individual's name appears on a monitor connected to a

microcontroller unit. The processor also features a user code input on a keyboard connected to a

controller. The locker door opens automatically once the code and fingerprints match, and the

system sounds an alarm if the code is incorrect. (Dr. Rathaiah et al., 2021).
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE, STUDIES, AND SYSTEMS:

Marquez et al. (2019) highlight the increasing importance of electronic gadgets in daily life,

particularly in home security. They propose a prototype using Arduino Uno, MQ5 Gas Sensor, I2C

LCD 16x2, AS608 Fingerprint Module Sensor, Relay Module, 12vSolenoid, Photo Control Switch,

and 12v Power Supply to tighten the security of the house. The study validates the prototype's goal

of making the environment free from theft, loss, and unauthorized access of personal belongings,

ensuring a safer and more secure environment.

Synthesis of the Review:

The review of literature and studies supports the development of fingerprint-based locker

systems, which eliminate the need for physical keys or combination locks. These systems offer

reliable and safe storage options, but can lead to security and privacy issues. Researchers have

developed smart door locks using face recognition and fingerprint scanners, traditional locking

methods like RFID cards, passwords, and keys, and biometric fingerprint systems incorporating pin

codes. These systems aim to improve security and reduce theft, loss, and unauthorized access to

personal belongings.
