Bridge Watchkeeping

LO 3

Ship Handling

Revised RJL 06/2013

www.marineinsight.com
 Manoeuvring a ship is not an easy task,
it is a skill which comes with observation
and practice. The ship’s captain aided by
the pilot plays a vital role in handling the
ship when entering and leaving port.
 During the passage all the ship’s officers
in charge of a bridge watch should be
aware of the various conditions that
influence the handling of the ship in
order to ensure smooth sailing.
Learning Outcome

 This outcome will introduce you to and

explain basic vessel hydrodynamics, the
factors affecting manoeuvres, and how
to make manoeuvres
Knowledge & Skills
On conclusion of the course you should be
aware of :
The factors which have an effect on
manoeuvres, turning circles, and stopping
distances
Basic procedures when manoeuvring a
vessel.
Factors effecting manoeuvres, turning
circles, and stopping distances include:
Deadweight, Draught and trim
Speed and rudder angle
Transverse thrust
Different types of propellers
Underkeel clearance
Working with tugs
Dangers encountered in Heavy weather
Interaction
The Manoeuvres we shall be looking at
are;
Turning the vessel short around
The Emergency stop procedures.
The various Man overboard manoeuvres
Manoeuvring to minimise collision
damage
Turning in heavy weather.
Assessment Requirements
At the end of the course you will be
assessed by short answer questions
under supervised conditions.
You will be required to explain on a
sample basis the factors which affect
manoeuvring characteristics and stopping
distances .
And to explain how to make any three of
the manoeuvres covered in this course.

Qualities of a ship handler
Awareness
 Wind and weather
 Current and tide
 Vessels characteristics
And
 Ability to work in a team
 Ability to stay calm
 Reactionary
Factors Affecting
Vessels Manoeuvring
Characteristics
Influences on the ship may be:
Internal
External
Internal Factors
 Vessels length and breadth.
 Coefficient of fineness and block
coefficient
 Single or twin screw
 If the vessel has thrusters.
 How much the vessel is exposed to the
wind
 Condition of the vessel
 Position of the pivot point
External Factors

 Available depth of water.

 Relative direction and strength of the
wind.
 Strength of current and tides.
 Height of waves and swell.
 How close the vessel is to land, ice and
other vessels.
Forces involved when
manoeuvering fall broadly into
the following groups:
 Controllable
 Uncontrollable
 Semi-controllable
Controllable Forces include:

 Engines/Propellers
 Rudder

 Bow Thrusters

 Tugs

 Anchors

 Lines
Uncontrollable Forces:

 WIND
 CURRENT

Semi-Controllable

 SHALLOW WATER EFFECTS

 PASSING EFFECTS
Hull Form
Coefficient of fineness
 How readily the
vessel will travel in
a straight line
without deviation.
 Finer the lines the
greater the
directional stability.
