Histor
y
⚬Pre-1450s: Inhabited by native groups like the Tausūg,
Sama-Bajau, and Yakan; engaged in trade with China,
Borneo, and the Malay region.
⚬1450: Sultanate of Sulu was founded by Sharif ul-Hashim
(Abu Bakhr), marking the spread of Islam and the rise of a
powerful Muslim kingdom.
⚬1500s–1800s: The Spanish attempted to colonize Sulu but
failed due to strong resistance from the Tausūg warriors.

⚬Late 1800s: Spain signed treaties claiming Sulu, but had weak
actual control over the island.
⚬1899–1940s: Under American rule, the power of the Sultanate
was diminished and Sulu was integrated into the Philippine
governance system.
⚬1946–Present: After Philippine independence, Sulu became a
province, and is now part of the Bangsamoro Autonomous
Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
