Physics 1 - Length and Time

The document outlines the concepts of length and time in physics, detailing the use of various measuring tools such as rules, measuring cylinders, and clocks. It distinguishes between base quantities (like length, mass, and time) and derived quantities (like speed and force), and introduces scientific notation for expressing large or small values. Additionally, it explains methods for measuring time intervals, including the average time for repeated events like a pendulum swing.

PHYSICS – Length and Time

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1.1 Length and time

Core Supplement
• Use and describe the use of • Understand that a micrometer
rules and measuring cylinders to screw gauge is used to measure
find a length or a volume very small distances
• Use and describe the use of
clocks and devices, both
analogue and digital, for
measuring an interval of time
• Obtain an average value for a
small distance and for a short
interval of time by measuring
multiples (including the period
of a pendulum).
Physical Quantity
There are two types of Physical Quantities.
1. Base Quantity
Physical quantity that cannot be defined or derived from any other Physical quantity
Quantity Symbol SI Units Units (Symbol)

1. Length l meter m

2. Mass m kilogram kg

3. Time t second s

4. Temperature T Kelvin K

5. Electric current I Ampere A

2. Derived Quantity
Physical quantity obtained through a combination of base quantities.

Examples: Speed, Velocity, Force, Momentum etc.

Scientific Notation
Prefixes
Scientific Notation

1. Where A ≤ 1 < 10 and n = integer

2. The value of A should always be rounded to 3 or 4 significant numbers.
Examples: 1. 676,000,000,000 m = 6.76 x1011 = 6.76 1008 Km
2. 300,000,000 m = 3 x 108 = ?
3. 0.00000078 = 7.8 X10-7

LENGTH
1. Length is a distance measured and its SI unit is the meter (m).

2. Length is usually measured with a rule.

3. Small lengths are measured with a micrometer Screw Gauge.

Let’s have a think now

Measuring
Volume and time.

1. We can also find the length of a single wire of certain Area.

2. Small length of wire, twisted and wire around can be easily found by using a scale and
Unitary Method.
Let’s have a think now
about what we might
use to measure Volume
Measuring
of an object.
Volume

1. The volume of a liquid may be obtained by pouring it into a measuring cylinder.

2. When making a reading cylinder must be upright and your eye must be level with the
bottom of the curved liquid surface, i.e. the Meniscus.
Let’s have a think now
about what we might Measuring
use to measure time.
TIME

1. Time is usually measured with a stop Watch.

2. The S.I unit of time is Seconds (s).
3. For repeated events, an average time can be found by measuring a number of repeats then
dividing by the number of cycles eg. a pendulum.
