Introduction

 School in modern times – seen as the most suitable, active


and formal agency of education
 School develops and grows with specific goals of society
 School: derived from the Greek word – ‘Skhole’ – means
leisure. The Greeks meant that leisure time should be used
in a systematic way.
 By now – this concept has changed to prime time activity;
now it is an essential investment field on which the entire
superstructure of the life of the individual and the nation will
be built.
Social Functions
1) Conservation and promotion of culture
2) All-round development of the individual
3) Development of higher values of life
4) Development of social responsibility
5) Citizenship training
6) Adjustability in society
7) Vocational training
1.Conservation and promotion of
culture
Conserves/preserves the culture, traditions, values of
the society and helps in promoting and developing
these as time goes on; spread culture to next
generation
2. All-round development of the
individual
Does this through various activities/programmes; draws out
hidden talents of the children - develops holistically
3. Development of higher values
of life Developing and cultivating good and higher values

E.g. truth, sympathy,


love, co-operation in
a child; through
different
interactions and
moral teachings;
spreads the message
of righteous living
(being a person with
integrity – truthful,
honest, reliable,
upright) in a society
4. Development of social responsibility
School is a mini-society; child learns the lessons of social duty,
responsibilities and understanding the feeling of others (see
Bill of Responsibilities); school helps in social change and
social control
5.Citizenship training
Child learns the duties and civic rights of a country; therefore,
school trains the lessons of citizenship to a child (see Bill of
Responsibilities)
6. Adjustability in society
• To develop adjustment capacity of an individual
• For example: i) Recycling – big issue nowadays
ii) Saving water - imperative in CPT
iii) HIV/AIDS – use gloves if blood is
involved; safe sex or abstinence
7. Vocational training
School provides training in different vocations; cultivates the
values of dignity of work and labour
Conclusion

The role of the school cannot be defined within these lines; role of
the school has been increasing day by day; called the HUB of
learning/prestigious institution in the society …. Man-making
factory
