IMPORTANT TERMS
Slope-Intercept Form

The slope-intercept form of a linear equation is

𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃.

𝑚 is the slope

𝑏 is the 𝑦 − 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡
Point-Slope Form

The point-slope form of an equation is

Slope
To work out the slope using any two points on a line, use:

Slopes of Parallel Lines

Slopes of parallel lines are the same.

Slopes of Perpendicular Lines

Slopes of perpendicular lines are negative reciprocals. This means, if we multiply them
together, we get -1.
To write an equation of a line:

If given: Use:
Slope and y- Slope-intercept
intercept form
Slope and a Point-slope form
point
Two points Point-slope form

Writing equations when given the slope and y-intercept

• Example: Find the equation of a line with slope −9 and y-intercept (0, −4).

y = mx + b

Slope (m) -9
y-intercept -4

Substitute into y = mx + b y = -9x - 4

Answer
y = -9x - 4
