Forming Alternative
Questions
Alternative question usually starts with auxiliary verb, primary (be,
do, have) or modal (will, would, should, etc). But if the main verb
used is the verb "be", then the auxiliary is no longer needed.
We usually form alternative questions with an auxiliary verb (be, do or have) +
subject + main verb or with a modal verb + subject + main verb:
-Are we eating in or out this evening? (answer: We’re eating in. or We’re eating
out.)
-Does she work in the city or in the suburbs? (answer: She works in the city.
or She works in the suburbs.)
-Will they buy a house or rent somewhere? (answer: They’ll buy a house.
or They’ll rent somewhere.)
Responding to Alternative
Questions
We can answer an alternative question in different ways, but we do not
normally answer yes:
A: Would you like mayonnaise or butter on it?
Possible responses:
B: Mayonnaise, please.
-Butter, please.
-Both, please.
(Neither, thanks. (Neither means that you don’t want mayonnaise or
butter.)
(No, thanks. (No means that you don’t want either alternative.)
(Not: Yes.)

Question tags are short precedes it. When the statement sentence uses the
questions added at the linking verb "be" (is, am, are, was, were), then the
end of a statement question tag also uses be. If the statement uses a

there are more than One). Meanwhile, when the
declarative sentence uses the main verb other than the
linking verb "be" and without being accompanied by an
auxiliary verb, dummy auxiliary “do/does/did” used in
the question tag.

8. You have finished your homework, haven’t you?
9. They won’t attend the seminar, will they?
10.They will attend the seminar, won’t they?
● You didn’t drink alcohol, did you?
• If the speaker does not know whether the other person drinks alcohol and he wants to
know the answer, a question tag is emphasized with rising intonation.
• If the speaker just wants to know that the other person doesn't drink alcohol and only
expects confirmation, the question tag is said without emphasis with a descending
intonation
How to Make Question
Tags
1. If the sentence is positive, then the question tag is negative.
Example:
• Sandy is smart, isn't she?
• Jeremy and Tom are making a bowl of noodles, aren't they?
Note: If the question tag is negative, then the note must be abbreviated.
Example :
isn’t he? (✔)
is not he? (✖)
2. If the sentence is in the form of a prohibition or command, use
will you for the question tag.
Example:
• Don’t be noisy, will you?
• Don’t make me upset, will you?
3. If the sentence is negative, then the question tag is positive.
Example:
• Sandy is not smart, is
• Jeremy and Tom are not making a bowl of noodles, are they?
4. If the sentence uses simple present or simple past, then
use do/does (present) or did(past).
Example:
• Sinta buys Amanda Cakes in Bandung, doesn’t she?
5. If the subject is I am, then the question tag are't I. However, if the
subject I am not, then the question tag is I.
Example:
• I am not rude, am I?
• I am diligent, aren’t I?
6. If the sentence uses modals, then use modals for the question tag.
Especially for the modals have to, use the auxiliary word do for the
question tag.

• Jack can’t drive a car, can he?
• They have to make a film now, don’t they?

one and nobody, then use they in the question tag.
Example:
• Everybody went to the restaurant, didn’t they?
• Somebody brought the guitar to my studio last week, didn’t they?
8. If the sentence contains a word with a negative meaning, for
example nobody, hardly no one, rarely
nothing, seldom, barely then use the positive question tag .
Example:
• No one comes to my house, do they?
• She never seems to care, does she?
9. If the subject is something, everything, and nothing, then
use it in the question tag.
Example:
• Something is moving, isn’t it?
• Everything should be ready, shouldn’t it?
10. If the sentence starts with let's, then the question tag is shall we.
Example:
• Let’s forget it, shall we?

An embedded question is a

question mark when embedded
within a statement. NOTE:
There must not be an auxiliary
In English grammar, an between the Question Word and

2. Why did the plane land at the wrong airport?

airport.
NOTE:
Question words can be single
words or phrases. Phrases
include : whose + noun, how
many, how much, how long, how
often, what time, and what kind.
Embedded Question

Discussio
n
Alternative questions use the coordinate conjunction "or" to connect
between the answer choices. in its use in alternative question sentences it
is usually preceded by an auxiliary verb, primary (be, do, have) or modal
(will, would, should, etc). However, if the main verb used is the verb "be",
then the auxiliary is no longer needed. Alternative questions can also be
opened with a Wh-word, especially "which". Either which is an interrogative
pronoun (stand alone) or an interrogative adjective (followed by a noun).
Question Tags are like idioms (English expressions), question tags are a part
that is often used in the daily conversations of a native speaker. Even
though the grammar, pronunciation, and intonation are good, someone can
be easily recognized as not a native speaker if they don't use question tags.
Embedded question is a question (can be in the form of a wh- question or yes-no
question) that is inside a declarative statement or other question.
Five rules for using Embedded Questions
Rule one :
If the embedded question is part of a statement, use a period and not a question
mark at the end of the sentence. Also, if the question is in the present or past simple
verb tense, omit the auxiliary verbs do, does, and did and change the verb to its
appropriate form, as in the example below.
-Embedded Question : I wonder what time he left.
Rule two :
If the embedded question includes an auxiliary verb or the verb "to be", reverse the
position of the subject and the auxiliary verb, as in the example below.
-Embedded Question : Could you tell me what he said?
-Embedded Question I wonder if you could help me.
-Embedded Question Do you know if he is a doctor?
Rule three :
Do not use a verbal contraction at the end of the sentence.
-Correct Embedded Question : Do you know where he is?
-Incorrect Embedded Question Do you know where he's?
Rule four :
Embedded questions are introduced by whether, whether or not,
and if there is no question word in the sentence (yes/no questions).
-Embedded Question Do you know if he will be there?
-Do you know whether or not he will be there?
-Do you know whether he will be there or not?
Rule five :
The infinitive can follow a question word or whether in embedded
questions, as in the following example.
-Embedded Question : Please tell me what I should do.
-Embedded Question with an Infinitive; Please tell me what to do.
Conclusion
Alternative question is a form of interrogative
sentence that gives a choice of one of two or more
existing answers.
Question tags are short questions added at the
end of a statement (declarative sentence) to ask
for information or seek approval.
An embedded question is a question that
occurs as a subordinate clause rather than
as the main clause of the sentence. For
example, what you wrote is a question embedded
in the sentence I asked what you wrote
