Introduction to Maps

OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this lesson students will
be able to:

Identify different types of maps.

Describe the features of a map.


What is a map?
A map is a representation of
the Earth’s features drawn on a
flat surface.
Why are maps important?

“Maps are essential.

building a house

What were the reasons for having
maps?
1. With a good map, a military had an advantage in battle.

2. A king knew how much land could be taxed.

3. Western maps showed a country’s interior area as empty.

4. Maps helped propel the exploits of colonialism.

5. The primary effect of mapping is informational.

6. Mapping allows the viewer to get a spatial sense.

FEATURES OF A MAP
1. Title: Tells the name and type of map; it
tells us what the map is all about.

2. Scale: shows what a distance on a map is


actually equal to on earth.

3. Compass Rose (windrose): A figure on a
compass, map, or nautical chart use to display
the orientation of the cardinal direction: north,
East, South, and West

4. Grid Lines are horizontal and vertical
lines on a map. They divide the map into grid
squares. The lines are numbered for us to
make references to the locations.
 Eastings– vertical lines (numbers increase towards the
east)
 Northings – horizontal lines (numbers increase towards
the north)

5. Key/ Legend: Tells us what different
symbols, colors, and lines on a map means.

Climate Map

A climate map shows information about the climate of an


area. They can show things like the specific climatic zones
of an area based on the temperature, the amount of snow an
area receives or average number of cloudy days
Road Map

 A road map, route map, or street map is


a map that primarily displays roads and
transport links rather than natural
geographical information
Economic Map

Economic maps are used to facilitate planning and


forecasting the development and location of
productive forces as well as for management of the
national economy.
Political Map
 It shows division of places on the Earth into countries,
states, cities and other units for the purpose of governing
them.

 Usually colored by country or by state.


 Symbols make it easy to tell capitals from other cities.
 Political maps also name certain physical features, such as
rivers and lakes
Physical Map
 Physical maps show what the surface of the Earth
looks like.

 Colors stand for types of vegetation, mountain, and


natural features.
 Names of big natural features are easy to see.
 It also includes some political information, such as
boundaries.
Physical Maps
 There are different types of physical maps.
• Relief Maps – Show the difference in height
between land
• Elevation Maps – Show the elevation, or height
above sea level.
Topographic Map

A topographic map is a detailed illustration of man-made and natural


features such as roads, railways, power transmission lines, contours,
elevations, rivers, lakes and geographical names.
Thematic Map

A thematic map is a type of map especially designed to


show a particular theme connected with a specific
geographic area.
These maps "can portray physical, social, political,
cultural, economic, sociological, agricultural, or any other
aspects of a city, state, region, nation, or continent"

 A map is a representation of the Earth’s features drawn
