MAGNESIUM

INTRODUCTION
• Magnesium in human body is approximately 68% and is found
complexed with calcium and phosphorous in bone salts.
• About 26% is found in muscle and found in soft tissues and body
fluids. It is present in small concentration in all cells and is required for
cellular metabolism
• About 1% circulating in extra cellular fluid
• The normal level of magnesium is 1.7 to 2.2mg/dL or 0.85 to
1.10mmol/L
uses
• Activity of many enzymes depends on magnesium
• Maintains potassium and calcium homeostasis
• Required for the synthesis of fatty acids and protein
• Plays an important role in neuro muscular transmission
• Magnesium regulates parathyroid levels
• Is essential for maintaining normal heart beat and blood pressure
sources
• Whole wheat
• Spinach
• Almonds , cashews , peanuts
• Dark chocolate
• Black beans
• avacados
Recommended daily allowances
• Children 1 to 3 years – 80 mg
• Children 4 to 8 years – 130mg
• Children 9 to 13 years – 240mg
• Adult males – 400mg
• Adult females – 310 mg
• During pregnancy -350 mg
Deficiency symptoms -
hypomagnesemia
• Brain damage
• Susceptibility of kidney damage
• Neuro muscular mal functions
• High excitability
• Tremors and convulsions
• Depression
• Unstable internal cell structure
Toxicity levels
• Excessive dosage of magnesium supplements cause hypermagnesemia
• Symptoms - central nervous system such as depression,
• skeletal muscle paralysis, and in extreme cases coma and death
• Diarrhoea
• Nausea and vomiting
• Lethargy and weakness
• Decrease BP
• Urine retention
• Respiratory distress.
