Personal Development

“Life isn’t about finding yourself.

Life is about creating yourself.”
George Bernard Shaw
Personal Development is a process in
which a person reflects upon themselves,
understand who they are and accept
what they discover about themselves.
Personal Development
It is the conscious pursuit of personal growth by
expanding self-awareness and knowledge and
improving personal skills.

It includes activities that improve self-awareness and

identity, develop talents and potentials, enhance the
quality of life and contribute to the realization of
dreams and aspirations.
Personal Dev’t vs. Personality
Dev’t
• Personal development is the process of realizing
capabilities, unleashing potential, and achieving goals.

• Personality development is actually the development

from the organized pattern of attitudes and behaviors
which makes an individual distinctive.
Self-concept refers to your awareness of yourself.

The actual self and the ideal self are two broad
categories of self-concept.
Actual Self vs. Ideal Self
Actual self is your self-image. It is the one you actually
see. It is built on self-knowledge. Self knowledge is
derived from social interactions that provide insight into
how others react to you.

Ideal self is how we want to be. It could include

components of what your parents have taught us, what
we admire in others, or what our society promotes.
Self-concept vs. Self-esteem
• Self-concept is the individual’s belief about himself/herself, including
the person’s attributes and who and what the self is. It refers to a
broad description of ourselves. It answers the question “Who am I?”

• Self-esteem is your subjective sense of overall personal worth or

value. Similar to self-respect, it describes your level of confidence in
your abilities and attributes. It includes judgments or opinions we
have of ourselves. It answers the question “How do I feel about who I
am?”
Personal effectiveness means making use of all the
personal resources- talents, skills, energy and time, to
enable you to achieve your life goals.

Being self-aware, making the most of your

strengths, learning new skills and behavioural flexibility
are all keys to improving your personal performance.
