Computers and Information Systems

LECTURE # 01

COURSE INSTRUCTOR: UMAR AYAZ

Table of Contents
1. Introduction
2. Information Technology
Information Technology, commonly known as IT, is the use of computers, software, hardware, and
networks to process, store, transmit, and manage data. It involves the application of technology to collect,
organize, and analyze information for various purposes.
In simpler terms, IT encompasses everything related to computers and technology, from the devices we
use, such as laptops, smartphones, and servers, to the software that runs on these devices, and the
networks that connect them together.

Information
Technology = Hardware + Software + Networking + Internet + Data

Components of Information Technology

2. Information Technology----- Hardware
This includes the physical components of computer systems, such as the central processing unit (CPU),
memory (RAM), storage devices (hard drives, solid-state drives), input/output devices (keyboard, mouse,
monitor), and peripherals (printers, scanners, etc.).

Input/
Hardware
= CPU +
RAM and
storage + output + Peripherals

HDD and SSD? Difference

2. Information Technology----- Software
Software is a set of programs that control the functioning of the hardware. It includes operating systems
(like Windows, macOS, Linux), application software (such as Microsoft Office, web browsers), and
system software (Drivers).

Software
= OS + Application
software + System
software
2. Information Technology----- Networking
Networks are the interconnected systems that facilitate data communication and resource sharing
between computers and devices. Local Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs) are
typical examples of networks.

Networks
= LANs + MANs + WANs

LANs = Computing department of AASU or AASU network

MANs= City-wide networks (LAN1 + LAN2 + LAN 3 + LANn = MAN)
WANs = Country or www (MAN1 + MAN2 + MAN3 + MANn = WAN)
2. Information Technology----- Internet
Internet is basically a Network of Networks
Internet = WAN1 + WAN2 + WAN3 + WANn
The global network is known as the Internet, which connects computers and devices worldwide. It
allows access to vast amounts of information and services.
www (World Wide Web)
2. Information Technology----- Data
The data represents the raw information that is processed and managed by IT systems. Data can be in various
formats like text, numbers, images, audio, and video.
The data forms the basis for generating meaningful information and knowledge.
Information: The processed form of data, which have meaningful knowledge
Example : Student Exam Grades Summary
•Data: 85, 92, 78
•Information: The average score is 85, the highest score is 92, and the lowest score is 78.
By processing the exam scores, we can derive information about the average, highest, and
lowest scores, which helps understand the overall performance of the students.
data is the raw information that requires processing and analysis to become meaningful
and useful. Once data is organized and interpreted, it transforms into information that
helps us gain insights, make decisions,
3. Importance / Significance of I.T
IT plays a crucial role in numerous aspects of our personal and professional lives:
Improved Efficiency: IT streamlines processes, automates tasks, and reduces human errors, leading to
increased productivity and efficiency in various industries.
Enhanced Communication: IT enables instant communication, connecting people across the globe
through emails, social media, video conferencing, and messaging platforms.
Access to Information: The internet and IT provide access to a vast amount of information,
empowering individuals with knowledge and resources like never before.
Business Transformation: IT has transformed the way businesses operate, from marketing and
customer service to supply chain management and data analysis.
Education and Learning: IT has revolutionized education, making learning accessible through e-
learning platforms, online courses, and digital resources.
3. Importance / Significance of I.T
Healthcare Advancements: IT has played a vital role in modern healthcare, from electronic health
records to telemedicine and medical research
Entertainment and Media: IT has revolutionized the entertainment industry, allowing easy access to
music, movies, games, and digital content.
Social Impact: Social media and online communities bring people together, fostering connections and
collaboration across borders.
Cybersecurity: With the growth of IT, cybersecurity becomes essential to protect digital assets and
personal information from cyber threats.
In conclusion, Information Technology is an ever-evolving field that continues to shape our world and the
way we live. Understanding IT concepts is vital for adapting to the digital age and leveraging technology to
our advantage. As we move forward, the role of IT will undoubtedly expand, bringing both challenges and
opportunities. So, let's embrace the possibilities that IT offers and explore the incredible world of
technology
