Introduction to Systems Engineering

Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary field focused on designing, integrating, and managing complex systems throughout their life cycles. It arose from the need to handle increasing complexity in engineering projects, ensuring that all components work together towards common objectives. The discipline has evolved to include methods for better understanding and controlling the design and development of intricate systems, such as the International Space Station.

Introduction to

Systems Engineering
System?
• System is Architecture or collection of technologies serves for set of
users to full fill set of requirements
Design?
• Design is the process of understanding the user requirements and selecting the
components, module and technologies, and implenting to serve the requirements
Basic of the Systems

• Composite of people products and process

• Interacting components – complexity
• Satisfy stated common needs/objective
• Lifecycle
(from design  production  usage  redesign)

• People – manpower, human resources, users & beneficiary

• Products – tangible things
• Process – set of sequenced activities creating products

*Stated Objective- Well known objective to everyone. All components works towards satisfying the objective
Systems Engineering
• Two major domains
1) Technical Domain

2) Systems Engineering Management

• It is an interdisciplinary field of Engineering and engineering Management

• Example Aircraft is System
• Consider its different subsystem/parts
• Airframe (Aeronautical & Aerospace Engg)
• Propulsion (Mech. Engg)
• Control (Mech., Electrical, CS)
• Communication (Electrical, Electronics TC)
• Payload (Ergonomics, Humans)
All above aspect need to manage together to realize the common stated goal Aspects of SE Management
Systems Engineering
• How we can develop complex project that meets objective in an
efficient way.
• Minimize Rework
• Catch error early
• Effectively Communicate

• Systems engineering is process that we can use to develop the that is

too complex to design and build as a single monolithic entity.
• Idea  System
History and Origin

• The term systems engineering can be traced back to

Bell Telephone Laboratories in the 1940s.

• The need to identify and manipulate the properties of a system as

a whole, which in complex engineering projects may greatly differ
from the sum of the parts' properties, motivated various industries,
especially those developing systems for the U.S. military, to apply
the discipline
History and Origin
• When it was no longer possible to rely on design evolution to improve upon a
system and the existing tools were not sufficient to meet growing demands,
new methods began to be developed that addressed the complexity directly

• The continuing evolution of systems engineering comprises the development

and identification of new methods and modeling techniques.

• These methods aid in a better comprehension of the design and

developmental control of engineering systems as they row more complex.
Systems Engineering- Definition
• Systems engineering is an
• interdisciplinary field of engineering and engineering management
• that focuses on how to design, integrate, and manage complex systems over
their life cycles.

• Systems engineering - Def

• A logical sequence of activities and decisions that transforms an operational
needs into a description of system performance parameters and a preferred
system configuration. (MIL-STD-499A)-1974

• Initially the SE was targeted in developing the parameters and

configurations of the systems
• This is done considering the need of customer
Example of Public Acceptability

• Aircraft Concord designed as supersonic commercial aircraft

• Travel time from US to London is 3 to 4 hours

• Reduce the time half than that of normal travel

• But Concord was stopped ……..

• One of the reason is noise level and landing and takeoff of aircraft which was
unacceptable

This is the impact of customers acceptability

Revised Systems Engineering-
Definition
• Systems engineering - Def
• An interdisciplinary approach that encompasses the entire technical effort and
evolves into and verifies and integrated and life cycle balanced set of systems,
people, product and processes solutions that satisfies the customer needs. (EIA-
STD-IS-632)-1994

• This definitions is talking about entire technical efforts instead limiting to deriving…..
• The major aspect is introduced here the people, products and process
• Though the Public Acceptability word is not seems here the aspect is present here
• The life cycle balance systems term incorporates the public acceptability
Current Systems Engineering-
Definition
• Systems engineering - Def
• Manage and guide the complex engineered systems over the life cycles

(Kossiakoff et al., 2011)

• Definition is for engineered systems i.e., manmade systems

• Manage and guide term are supposed to have all the aspects people,
products and processes

System Complexity  Diverse components + intricate relationship (ex. Aircraft)

Common Objective  Significant Function
Engineered Systems  Exclude living things and ecosystems
Systems Engineering Management
Three major activities

Development Phasing
(1st Phase, where we freeze the
objective) Derives

Systems Engineering Process

(Systems specification- Objectives that
are loosely stated in English get
translated to quantitative, measurable
and verifiable facts. Team is formed)

Life Cycle Integration

Customer is integrated into the system
Need
• The need for systems engineering arose with the increase in complexity of
systems and projects, in turn exponentially increasing the possibility of
component friction, and therefore the unreliability of the design.

• When speaking in this context, complexity incorporates not only engineering

systems but also the logical human organization of data.

• At the same time, a system can become more complex due to an increase in
size as well as with an increase in the amount of data, variables, or the number
of fields that are involved in the design.

• The International Space Station is an example of such a system.
