VMware
• VMware is a virtualization and cloud
computing software provider based in Palo
Alto, Calif. Founded in 1998, VMware is a
subsidiary of Dell Technologies. EMC
Corporation originally acquired VMware in
2004; EMC was later acquired by Dell
Technologies in 2016. VMware bases its
virtualization technologies on its bare-metal
hypervisor ESX/ESXi in x86 architecture.
Server virtualization
• With VMware server virtualization, a
hypervisor is installed on the physical server to
allow for multiple virtual machines (VMs) to
run on the same physical server. Each VM can
run its own operating system (OS), which
means multiple OSes can run on one physical
server.
What is VMware and why is IT used?
• VMware is a virtualization and cloud
computing company that develops
virtualization software. They produce
virtualization, networking, and security
management tools. VMware software allows
you to run a virtual computer on your physical
computer. It increases the efficiency of your
computer system
Is VMware a tool or software?
• VMware is a virtualization and cloud
computing software provider based in Palo
Alto, Calif. Founded in 1998, VMware is a
subsidiary of Dell Technologies. EMC
Corporation originally acquired VMware in
2004; EMC was later acquired by Dell
Technologies in 2016.
What is the difference between virtual
machine and VMware?
• A virtual machine is a software computer, like
a physical computer, that runs an operating
system and applications. VMware Workstation
enables users to run multiple operating
systems simultaneously on a single physical
computer.
What are the different types of virtualization available?
• There are five types of visualizations available,
they are:
• Desktop Virtualization.
• Application Virtualization.
• Server Virtualization
• Storage Virtualization.
• Network Virtualization

What are the components of VMware infrastructure?
• VMware ESX Server
• VirtualCenter Server
• VMware Infrastructure Client (VI Client)
• VMware Infrastructure Web Access (VI Web Access)
• VMware Virtual Machine File System (VMFS)
• VMware Virtual Symmetric Multi-Processing (SMP)
• VMware VMotion and VMware Storage VMotion
• VMware High Availability (HA)
• VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS)
• VMware Consolidated Backup (Consolidated Backup)
• VMware Infrastructure SDK
What is vsphere
• VMware vsphere is the brand name for vm ware suite of virtualization
products,
• Vsphere include following components
• VMware ESXI
• Vcenter server
• vsphere client
• vsphere web client
• Other feature include -
• Vmotion
• High availability (HA)
• Distributed resources scheduler (DRS)
What does ESXi stand for?
• ESXi stands for ESX Integrated.
• VMware ESXi is a type-1, enterprise-class
hypervisor which easily install on to your
server and divides itself into multiple virtual
machines. It isn’t a software application,
although it includes and integrates vital OS
components, such as a kernel.
What is VMKernel? What is the VMkernel port used for?
• The VMkernel is the interface between virtual
machines (VMs) and the physical hardware of
the system. The responsibility of VMkernel is
scheduling CPUs, allocating memory and
providing other hardware abstraction with
other operating systems (OS) services.
What are VMware HA and VMware FT? What is the difference between the two?
• VMware HA: VMware HA (High Availability) works on
cluster level. By pooling virtual machines and hosts
resides into a cluster. Virtual machines running on failed
hosts are forced to restart on alternate hosts.
• VMware FT: Vmware FT (Fault Tolerance) works on VM
Level. In this a secondary virtual machine is created and
maintained as identical to the primary virtual machine
and it can be replaced when ESXi hosts fail to provide
continuous availability of virtual machines. It is a complete
copy of a virtual machine including storage, computation
and memory.
Explain VMware Fault Tolerance?
• VMware fault tolerance is an important
component of VMware vSphere, and it offers
continuous access to applications by
preventing data loss and downtime of virtual
machines in the event of ESX server failure.
What is the vCenter?
• VMware vCenter is advanced server
management software that provides a
centralized platform for controlling your
VMware vSphere environments, allowing you
to automate and deliver a virtual
infrastructure across the hybrid cloud with
confidence
What is the use of vSphere?
• The vSphere Client acts as an administrative
interface to access VMware hosts. These hosts,
which run VMware ESXi, are the servers that
run individual virtual machines (VMs). The
vSphere Client attaches to the host servers. By
using this interface, admins can create and
manage VMs, as well as host resources.
What is vMotion?
• VMware vMotion is a technology that enables
the live migration of a virtual machine from
one physical server to another without any
downtime. This process helps maximize the
performance and availability of your VMs by
taking advantage of server consolidation,
maintenance, and load-balancing capabilities.
VMware VMFS (Virtual Machine File
System)
• clustered file system used by the company's
flagship server virtualization suite, vSphere. It
was developed to store
virtual machine disk images, including snapshots.
Multiple servers can read/write the same
filesystem simultaneously while individual virtual
machine files are locked. VMFS volumes can be
logically "grown" (non-destructively increased in
size) by spanning multiple VMFS volumes
together.
VMware Infrastructure
VMware ESX Server
• A robust, production‐proven virtualization
layer run on physical servers that abstracts
processor, memory, storage, and networking
resources into multiple virtual machines. Two
versions of ESX Server are available:
• VirtualCenter Server – The central point for
configuring, provisioning, and managing
virtualized IT environments. VMware
• Infrastructure Client (VI Client) – An interface
that allows users to connect remotely to the
VirtualCenter Server or individual ESX Servers
from any Windows PC.
• VMware Infrastructure Web Access (VI Web
Access) – A Web interface that allows virtual
machine management and access to remote
consoles.
• VMware Virtual Machine File System (VMFS)

running virtual machines from one physical server to
another with zero down time, continuous service
availability, and complete transaction integrity.
VMware Storage VMotion enables the migration of
virtual machine files from one datastore to another
without service interruption.
VMware High Availability (HA)
• VMware High Availability (HA) – Feature that
provides easy‐to‐use, cost‐effective high
availability for applications running in virtual
machines. In the event of server failure,
affected virtual machines are automatically
restarted on other production servers that
have spare capacity.
VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler
(DRS)
• VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler
(DRS) – Feature that allocates and balances
computing capacity dynamically across
collections of hardware resources for virtual
machines. This feature includes distributed
power management (DPM) capabilities that
enable a datacenter to significantly reduce its
power consumption.
