PHYSICS-LIGHT
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING
1.What do you mean by reflection?
The returning of a ray of light when it strikes a polished surface in
accordance with definite laws is called reflection.
2. What is meant by normal to the surface?
The perpendicular line drawn to the surface at the point of incidence is
called the normal.
3. Can a real image be obtained on a screen?
Yes. Real image can be obtained on a screen.
4. Write two uses of plane mirrors.
i) They are used as a looking glass.
ii) They are used in a solar cooker, to reflect the rays of the sun into the
interior of the cooker.
5. What is lateral inversion?
The phenomenon of right appearing left and left appearing right on
reflection in a plane mirror is called lateral inversion.
Examples :
6. State two laws of reflection.
i) The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection.
ii) The angle of incidence, the normal and the angle of reflection all lie on
the same plane.

7. Define dispersion of light.
The phenomenon of splitting of white light into its seven constituent
colours is known as dispersion of light. The seven colours are: Violet,
Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red.(VIBGYOR).
8. Write the differences between a real image and a virtual image

or refraction meet at a point. refraction appear to meet at a point.
It is always inverted It is always erect but laterally inverted.
9.Explain the difference between regular and irregular reflection with
the help of diagrams.
REGULAR REFLECTION IRREGULAR REFLECTION
9. Regular reflection takes place Irregular reflection takes place
when light rays fall on a smooth when light rays fall on a rough
surface. surface.
In regular reflection, the In irregular reflection, the
reflected rays are parallel to one reflected rays are not parallel
another. to one another.

10. Why do you sometimes see a rainbow in the sky?
A rainbow is formed owing to the phenomenon of dispersion of light.
Tiny drops of water in the sky act as tiny prisms. When sunlight is
passed through these tiny prisms, it splits into seven colours, which
appear in the form of a rainbow in the sky.
11. What are the properties of the image formed by a plane mirror?
i) It is a virtual image.
ii) It is of the same size as the object .
iii) It is at the same distance behind the mirror as the object is in
front of the mirror.
iv) It is laterally inverted.
