COMPUTER MALWARE
• It is a malicious software made to cause harm to your system.

• Gets installed on a computer without approval from


computer’s owner.
Types of malware
• Virus - A program that is able to copy itself when it is run , affects
the original program causing it no longer work properly.

• Worm – It can copy itself and spread rapidly to any device


attached.

• Trojan Horse – Dangerous virus , gains access to sensitive data


modifies , blocks or deletes the data.

• Spyware – Observes user’s activity without their knowledge such


as account password or bank details.

• Adware – Traces user’s browser and download history and pops


advertisements on screen.
Most dangerous malwares
• Wabbit virus(1974) – system slows down and crashes
• Iloveyou virus(2000) – looks like a harmless text file
• Code Red worm(2001) – spreads itself with message “Hacked
by Chinese!”
• My doom worm(2004) – sent copies to scraped addresses
• Storm worm(2007) – sent email about approaching bad
weather
• Zues(2007) – steal banking information of United States
Department of Transportation
• Emotet(2014) – spreads through spam emails to steal banking
information
• Pegasus(2016) – Spyware infects smartphone and track the
devices for every action
Harms caused by computer
malware
Malwares will affect your computer in different ways
• Can crash the hard disk
• Can destroy all or some of the data
• Decrease the processing speed of the computer
• Can block the memory of the computer or hard disk
• Stop you from restarting or keep on restarting your computer
• Send e-mails from your account without your knowledge
How does a computer get
infected?
Malwares spread through several ways .
• Using infected CD’s / Pen drives
• Opening an infected e-mail attachment
• Downloading infected files from internet , pen drives,
cds, dvds
• Running an infected program like game , screen saver
etc.
• Through local computer networks
Symptoms of an infected
computer
Infected computer system will:
• Starts displaying unusual messages on the screen.
• Loads the programs late.
• Take more time to shut down the windows.
• Increase the size of files.
• Change the file names or types automatically.

 A set of programs that identify and remove malware are known as

 Antivirus software developers regularly release updates on Internet that
allow their program to detect latest viruses.
 Can download or upload antivirus programs only through the internet
 Some well known antivirus programs are Norton, Quick Heal, AVG ,
MCAfee ,Symantec, Kaspersy , etc.
