The research investigates the impact of donor characteristics on platelet yield in Single Donor Platelet (SDP) collection through apheresis, aiming to optimize donor selection and apheresis protocols. Key findings indicate that pre-donation platelet count positively correlates with SDP yield, while mean platelet volume (MPV) negatively correlates, with demographic factors showing minimal impact. The study highlights the need for further research across multiple centers and diverse donor populations to enhance platelet collection efficiency.

Exploring the Impact of Donor Characteristics on Platelet Count in Single

Donor Platelet (SDP) Collection Through Aphaeresis: A Single Center Study
INTRODUCTION
• Platelet Transfusion: Essential for thrombocytopenic patients undergoing
chemotherapy or major surgeries.

• Single Donor Platelets (SDP): Preferred due to higher yield and lower risk of
infections compared to random donor platelets.

• Problem Statement: Despite technological advancements in apheresis, variability

in platelet yield among donors remains a challenge.

• Aim: Investigate donor characteristics influencing SDP yield to optimize donor

selection and apheresis protocols.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

• Identify donor factors influencing platelet yield

in SDP collection.

• Optimize donor selection criteria for efficient

plateletpheresis.
LITERATURE REVIEW

•Global Studies:
Found pre-donation platelet count as a key predictor of SDP yield; contradictory
findings on age and blood group influences.

•Technological Advances:
Improved apheresis techniques, but donor-related variability persists.

•Research Gap:
Limited data on the impact of donor characteristics in the Pakistani population.

RESULTS-DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS

Donor Characteristics:
• Mean age: 29.0 ± 6.84 years
• Mean weight: 75.8 ± 7.32 kg
• Ethnicity: 95.96% Punjabi

Pre-Donation Parameters:
• Mean platelet count: 254.13 ± 51.004 x 10⁹/L
• MPV: 10.5 (±1.3) fL
KEYS FINDINGS

Significant Findings:
• Pre-donation platelet count: Positive correlation with SDP yield
(β = 0.230, p = 0.017)
• MPV: Negative correlation with SDP yield (β = -0.230, p = 0.017)

No Correlation:
• Age (p = 0.138), weight (p = 0.064), blood group (p = 0.716)
DISCUSSION

• Pre-Donation Platelet Count:

Consistent with global studies (Srivastava et al., 2023; Chatterjee et al., 2021)
MPV: Larger platelets → lower yield (Chopra et al., 2023)

• Blood Group & Demographics: No impact aligns with Saini et al. (2024)
CONCLUSION

Key Findings:
• Pre-donation platelet count and MPV are significant predictors of SDP yield.
• Demographic factors (age, weight, and blood group) show minimal impact.

Significance:
• Recommendations can improve platelet collection efficiency and donor
management in transfusion centers.
STUDY-LIMITATIONS
• Single-center study
• Limited to male donors

Future Research Recommendations:

• Expand to multiple centers
• Include female and diverse donor populations
• Explore additional hematological factors impacting SDP yield
