Composition of
Functions
The operation on composition of function involves
substituting a function into another function. For
instances if f(x)= and g(x) – x+ 3 and we would like to
substitute g(x) into f(x), then, we would get f(x+3)= .
This is called the composite function of f and g of x ,
which maybe written (f • g) (x) or f(g(x)) and read f of
g of x. here, g is the inner function while f is the outer
function.
Note: the inner function is always substituted into the
outer function.
Examples
f(x) = x +5x+6
2
h(x)=x+2
Find the following:
a.(f ∘ h)(x)
b.(f ∘ h)(4)
c.(h ∘ f)(x)
Examples
i(x) = 4x-5
j(x)=x +4
2
Find the following:
a.(i ∘ j)(x)
b.(i ∘ j)(4)
c.(j ∘ i)(x)
