Week 4 Judge The Relevance and Worth of Ideas To Use
Week 4 Judge The Relevance and Worth of Ideas To Use
Verbs have two voices. The active voice and the passive voice. Study the given examples in the
chart and cite how they differ in form and function.
Passive voice
In passive sentences, the thing receiving the action is the subject of the sentence and the thing
doing the action is optionally included near the end of the sentence.
• The following are the changes occurred in the pronouns while converting from active
to passive.
Active Passive
I me

1. Move the active sentence's direct object into the sentence's subject slot

3. Add a form of the auxiliary verb be to the main verb and change the main verb's form
Because passive voice sentences necessarily add words and change the normal doer-action-receiver
of action direction, they may make the reader work harder to understand the intended meaning.
As the examples below illustrate, a sentence in active voice flows more smoothly and is easier to
understand than the same sentence in passive voice.
Here are examples of Active (A) versus Passive (P) voice in the six main
Present tense
tenses: Subject + Verb + object S + to be + past participle + by object
E.g. The grocer sells fresh vegetables. E.g. Fresh vegetables are sold by the grocer.
Present perfect tense Subject + has/have + past participle + obj. S + have/has been + past participle + by obj.
E.g. I have taken him out. E.g. He has been taken out by me.
Past tense Subject + cleaned + object S + was/were + past participle + by object
E.g. He cleaned the floor E.g. The floor was cleaned by him.
Past perfect tense Subject + had + past participle + object E.g. The letter had been posted by her.
E.g. She had posted the letter. S + had been + past participle + by objec
Future tense Subject + will + verb + object S + will + be + past participle + by object
E.g. We will mail our proposal next week. E.g. Our proposal will be mailed next week.
Future perfect tense Subject + would + verb + object S + would + be + past participle + by object
E.g. Beatrice would have taken E.g. The gadgets would have been taken
the gadgets before the end of the by Beatrice before the end of the week.

GENERALIZATION:
You may already know the difference between active and passive voice. But
here's a refresher:
Generally, in active sentences, the subject comes before the verb. In passive
sentences, the subject comes after the verb. Writing sentences in passive voice
can obscure the subject of the sentence and confuse the reader. The good news
is that it's quite easy to change the passive voice to the active voice.
