3. Add a form of the auxiliary verb be to the main verb and change the main verb's form

Because passive voice sentences necessarily add words and change the normal doer-action-receiver
of action direction, they may make the reader work harder to understand the intended meaning.

As the examples below illustrate, a sentence in active voice flows more smoothly and is easier to
understand than the same sentence in passive voice.

Here are examples of Active (A) versus Passive (P) voice in the six main

GENERALIZATION:

You may already know the difference between active and passive voice. But
here's a refresher:

• Active voice - the subject performs the verb's action. (For

example: Tom changed the flat tire.)
• Passive voice - the subject receives the verb's action. (For example:
The tire was changed by Tom.)

Generally, in active sentences, the subject comes before the verb. In passive
sentences, the subject comes after the verb. Writing sentences in passive voice
can obscure the subject of the sentence and confuse the reader. The good news
is that it's quite easy to change the passive voice to the active voice.

MODULE IN ENGLISH 9
Fourth Quarter/ Week 2/ D2
OBJECTIVE: Change direct to indirect speech and vice- versa (EN9G-IVf-1)

LESSON FOR TODAY: Using Direct and Indirect Speech

What is Direct & Indirect Speech?

Direct speech – reporting the message of the speaker in the exact words as spoken by him.
Example: Maya said ‘I am busy now’.

Indirect speech: reporting the message of the speaker in our own words
Example: Maya said that she was busy then
Rules in Changing Direct Speech to Indirect/Reported Speech

Rule 1:

Use of conjunction that before the indirect speech except in case of imperative sentences and exclamatory
sentences.
Example:
Hari said, “I am very tired.” Hari said that
he was very tired.

Rule 2:
Change in pronouns of first and second person in Direct speech to third person in indirect speech taking
into account the gender of the subject.
Example: Ram said “I am very busy”. Ram said
that he was very busy.

Rule 3:
If reporting verb is in Present or Future Tense,
the tense of the verb in the reported speech is
not changed.
Example:
He says “I am busy”. He says that
he is busy.
He will say “I was busy.” He will say
that he was busy

Rule 4:
If reporting verb is in the Past Tense, the tense of the verb in the reported speech is also changed into one of
the forms of the past tense. Thus the verb changes as per norms given below.
a. The Present Simple Tense becomes Past Simple Tense
He said “I play football every evening”.
He said he played football every evening.
b. Present Continuous becomes Past
Continuous
He said “I am playing football”.
He said he was playing
football.
c. Present Perfect becomes Past
Prefect
He said “I have played football for two years”.
He said he had played football for two years.
d. Present Perfect Continuous becomes Past
Perfect Continuous

Name of Teacher : Section :

e. Future becomes Conditional

He said “I shall play football next year”.
He said he would play football next year.
f. Future Perfect becomes Conditional
Perfect
He said “I shall have played football for two years next June”.
He said he would have played football for two years next
June.

Exceptions to the Above Rules:

(a)If reported speech expresses universal truth or habitual fact the tense of the verb in the reported
speech is not changed into the corresponding past.
We are an emerging division where excellence is a habit and allegiance for quality is a pledge.
He said, “Earth goes round the Sun”.
He said that Earth goes round the
Sun. “German is easy to learn”, he
said.
He said German is/ was easy to learn.
(b) The reporting verb ‗say is changed into tell if it is followed by a
verb. Direct Speech: “We shall go on a picnic” he said to me.
Indirect Speech: He told me they would go on a picnic.
Direct Speech: The teacher said to the boys, “You should do your work regularly”.
Indirect Speech: The teacher told the boys that they should do their work regularly

Changing interrogative Sentences:

In reporting questions, the indirect speech is introduced by such verbs as asked, inquired, wonder, wanted
to know.
(c) If the answer to the question is either yes or no, we use whether or
if. He said, “Will you listen to such a man”?
He asked them whether they would listen to such a man.
(b) In negative statement we use do and did‘. The same is used in negative indirect questions.
“Don’t you like to play football” Hari asked Ram.
Ram asked Hari if he didn’t like to play football.

Changing Imperative Sentences:

In reporting an imperative sentence like a command or request. The reporting verb say or tell is changed
to a verb expressing a command, advice or request.
Example:
Word used in Commands: order, bid, warn
Word used in Request: request, implore
Word used in Proposal: advise, proposed, suggest
Word used in Prohibit: forbid
Word used in Entreaty: entreat, pray, beg
(c) That is commonly not used. If it is used then instead
of to, should is placed before the imperative.
(d) The imperative mood is changed into the infinitive.
(e) Rules for change of pronoun must be observed,
Example:
He said to me, “Please give me your
book”. He requested me to give him my
book.
Changing Exclamatory Sentences:
When the Direct Speech is introduced by some verb expressing exclamation or wish as, exclaim,
cry, wish, confess etc., all interjections are omitted, but their force is kept by suitable adverbs or
expressive words as given below.
The conjunction ‗that is used after the reporting verb
Example:
“Alas! Sohan has failed in his exams,” saidPageRohan.
7 of 20
Rohan exclaimed with sorrow that Sohan had failed in his exams.

Old Vendor Surprised on Being Given a Bike

June 04, 2020- By Patrick Garcia
A video of an elderly man and a bike shop owner Wednesday June 03 is touching the hearts of many as
it proved that despite the threat of COVID-19, there are still people willing to help others in this
time of crisis. According to Juhdel Pagador, the staff of Carandang Bike Shop in Pasay City and the
uploader of the video, the elderly man, Carlos Samonte, had been visiting the shop everyday for
almost a week asking if there were any bikes available to purchase. When the shop finally had an
available stock of mini mountain bikes, Samonte asked if he could buy one for 2000 pesos as that was
the only money he had. The amount was less than half its original price of 4500 pesos. But after he’d
been back to the shop several times to look at the bike. The shop’s owner, Fe Carandang agreed to
give the bike to Samonte for free and even gave him a bike lock to prevent it from being stolen,
saying “Take it. it’s our gift to you.” Carandang said, Samonte walks Nichols to Makati everyday to
sell candies. With the ongoing General Community Quarantine (GCQ) due to the Covid-19
pandemic, some public transportation has been suspended to regulate the movement of people
and to maintain social distancing. Because of this, commuters often walk or bike for kilometers just
to reach their workplaces.

Fourth Quarter/ Week 2/ Day 4

OBJECTIVE: Judge the relevance and worth of ideas, soundness of author’s reasoning and effectiveness of
the presentation. - EN9RC-IVf-2.22

YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY

• In this time of pandemic at the digital age, online media play a crucial role as we obtain much
of the information we need through many platforms available such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook,
Twitter, etc. Each provides rapid dissemination of information which also allows us to access news to
keep us updated. But we have to remember that not everything we see or hear in social media is true.
Therefore, we should learn how to assess and filter data before we react or believe in a certain issue.

• Relevance- is how appropriate is to what is being said at a given time.

Truth- is something that has been proven by facts or sincerity.
Author’s reasoning- is the opinion or belief that he or she wants to persuade readers to believe.
Effectiveness of the presentation- means working with both the audience and the topic. It's important
to know how to relate to who you are communicating with in order to get through to them.
• In this lesson you will be able to judge the relevance and worth of ideas, soundness of author’s
reasoning and effectiveness of the presentation.

• Tips on how to spot factual or truthful information

1. Consider the source- Investigate the site you are viewing or reading.
2. Read beyond- Headlines can be outrageous in an effort to get clicks, so you should focus on the
whole story. You have to read and look for details such as statistics, date, name, etc.
3. Check the Author- Do a quick search on the author to find out if they are real and credible.
4. Verify supporting sources- Determine if the given information actually supports the story.
5. Check the Date- Re-posting old news stories do not mean they’re relevant to current events. It
should be updated.
6. Check your biases- Consider your own belief could affect your judgement.

• You may also use a panel discussion to tackle the issues presented. Use the data gathered from
the ideas presented to dig for the relevance and truthfulness as well as to judge relevance and worth
of ideas, soundness of author’s reasoning and effectiveness of the presentation.

• Panel discussion is designed to provide an opportunity for a group to hear several people
knowledgeable about a specific issue or topic, present information, and discuss personal views. A panel
discussion may help the audience further clarify and evaluate their positions regarding specific issues
or topics being discussed and increase their understanding of the positions of others.
