A Turning Point in World History
What Was the French Revolution?
• A period of radical political and social change
in France.
• Overthrew the monarchy and feudal system.
• Introduced ideas of liberty, equality, and
fraternity.
Causes of the Revolution
• 1. Social Inequality: Three Estates - Clergy,
Nobility, Commoners.
• 2. Economic Crisis: Debt, food shortage, high
taxes.
• 3. Enlightenment Ideas: Liberty, democracy,
individual rights.
• 4. Weak Monarchy: Indecisive king and
extravagant queen.

• 1789 – Estates-General & National Assembly
formed.
• 1789 – Storming of the Bastille.
• 1791 – Constitutional Monarchy.
• 1792 – France becomes a Republic.
• 1793 – Execution of King and Queen.
• 1793–94 – Reign of Terror.
• 1799 – Napoleon rises to power.
Storming of the Bastille (14 July
1789)
• A symbol of royal tyranny was attacked by
Parisians.
• Marked the start of the French Revolution.
• Bastille Day is now France’s National Day.
Declaration of the Rights of Man
(1789)
• Written by the National Assembly.
• Declared all men are equal with rights to
liberty, property, security, and resistance to
oppression.
• Freedom of speech, press, and religion.
Reign of Terror (1793–1794)
• Led by Robespierre and Jacobins.
• Mass executions of enemies of the revolution.
• Use of guillotine widespread.
• Ended with Robespierre’s execution.
Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte
• Popular military leader.
• Staged a coup in 1799.
• Ended the Revolution and declared himself
Emperor.
• Brought order but ended the Republic.
